Vocabulary and reading are very important, but your reason for learning is the most important thing of all! You have to think about why you want to learn Japanese, because that's what creates the will that you need to do your reps every day! The reason that you need to read for hours! When you've done over 1000 reps, and your hands are shaking, and you feel like you can't do another rep, then it's your reason that makes you go beyond your limits! It makes you go back in one more time and struggle to push through another 100 reps!

The problem with a lot of people is that they've never felt any pain. Any time it starts to get hard, they quit. For most skills, there is an unavoidable period of hardship and just plain hard work before you become proficient at it. If you avoid that period, that hardship, then how will you learn that skill? I dare you to take a little pain! I dare you to keep studying when you feel tired! Somebody said, "If I don't take a break, then I feel bad." What if you go through it anyways? You aren't going to die! At the end of pain is success! You aren't going to die because you're feeling a little pain! A lot of people won't be successful because when they're studying, they get tired and slowly peter out and eventually quit! Don't go to sleep until you succeed!

personally I've been learning japanese for more than 5 years now, but I don't really have any goal besides being able to understand and write it as well as english at some point in my life
because it's more or less just a hobby for me it's hard to say how much time I invest, sometimes I spend hours on it and some days I barely do anything
at first I just wanted to understand my animu better and tried to get around learning kanji and shit, nowadays I barely watch animu and want to be able to read japanese literature and watch "normal" movies etc. I think I pretty much wasted a lot of time in the first year because of this mentality, but I didn't want to give up.
I always wanted to be able to speak several languages before I die, so I also started learning french on the side

I'd say I'm still intermediate, sometimes I can perfectly read and understand a complicates sentences and somtimes I struggle with the most mundane shit

But I have only started to really study 12 months ago. Full ankidrone for 10 months, then read some Tae Kim and started reading recently - I can read some simple mango and understand Japanese streamers that speak slowly. I keep recognizing vocabulary in anime and music. Although not always, I can express myself enough to be understood and am able to understand the answer given to me,

I see myself being able to communicate better than nips speaking English on /int/ by the end of 2017. And being fully functional - maybe even advanced - by the end of 2018.

Fluency is something that takes time and I'm not really in a hurry, and... that's about it.
The contrast between my 8 years of weeb-watching anime and my now informed-watching anime is scary, if I keep improving this fast, listening (which is the hardest for me in any language) will soon be no problem.

I've been learning for around two years and a half, with the first year being more saying I'm going to learn and being incredibly lazy about learning kana than learning anything.
No sure about any goals. I might try to do a master in translation because nothing else appeals to me and I'm expected to stay in school for a long time.
I try to do anki every day but I'm a lazy piece of shit so I don't do that much. I always watch anime with no subs and I converse with Japanese acquaintances often, though.
I started to understand anime, and I found it fun, but lately I haven't had as much time so it's turned a bit into a chore. I want to change this and find the happiness of learning new words again.

Skills are alright. My forte are having casual discussions (I'm a good talker and I don't spill spaghetti everywhere even if I know my sentences aren't perfect) and oral comprehension, which would be pretty useless in an actual professional setting, but I'm not there yet so it's okay. I'd say I'm intermediate.

I also want to learn some other languages. I feel like learning a roman language would feel very easy after grinding kanji for Japanese.

Actively learning for maybe 2 weeks total between 2007 and 2010. Passively learning since 2005 through anime and occasional rikaisama translations of Japanese posts on the internet.
Recently thanks to anime, I started understanding so much spoken Japanese, like close to 100% comprehension of Japanese meant for little children, and for example 100% of the trailer for Kimi no na wa, that the feelings of "If I understand so much why don't I learn the damn language already" reached an overflowing point and I decided to actively learn again.
Have been mining core for the last 3 days and have 290 cards done (5%). That means I'll finish 6k in no time, only 2 months, r-right.

Sounds like the perfect condition to do some learning.

Protip for future: Learn to manipulate the "Next day starts at __ hours past midnight" setting.
If you need some sleep do a card or two (to maintain that 100% rating) and push the rollover time way back and go to bed. Once awake and fully refreshed do your reviews and then set the rollover time back to normal to get back to you usual schedule.

I have a firm grasp on hiragana, and I'm starting katakana today.

After that, the guide says to study Tae Kim grammar guide + Core2K/6K Anki deck.

Since Tae Kim's guide does not include exercises, how can I retain the info I learn? By just reading over each page multiple times, or reading it once and coming back to review it later?

Reading and encountering it in the wild. You'll encounter most of the basic stuff in the anki example sentences and the other grammar points will be a fuzzy memory you can quickly look up/review when you come across them.

Works on windows 10. You have to install some fonts to get the fonts to work, though.

I had DJ-san literally .zip his entire windows/font folder and send it to me then hangame worked after that. I now have tons of nip fonts on my computer i'll never fucking use.

I use Memrise for Serbian and it's pretty good actually and I even paid for premium (once when I was going to be on a flight to my town from Gothenburg to Stockholm and then home and felt bored)
I never use Memrise official courses though since they are mostly shit

You can make your own course and it's pretty good actually, easier to deal with than Anki when it comes to customization and such, even if it's more limited.

It's immensely useful in learning to distinguish certain kanji, and making sense of jukugo. When I look at something even as simple as 勉強 it seems a discordant mess so I don't retain it very well, but that's because I've not yet come across those radicals.

But when I see eg. 相手 I know the former kanji means mutual/inter- and the latter means hand. The combined meaning of partner is also pretty logical, even if that's not always the case.
Words like 日本 I know because I've seen them a million times, but RTK helps me break down and remember newer and more complex ones. Doing core6K at the same time I notice a marked improvement in retention for terms with kanji I've previously studied.

And learning the readings would be retarded because a single kanji can have a dozen nanori/onyomi. Better to learn that shit from vocab. The kanji study just serves as a stop-gap to the same end, but (in my case) with improved comprehension.

I did maybe 300 kanji with RTK years ago. Now I'm doing core6k. I think that RTK is a waste of time.

You don't always need mnemonics to remember kanji, and with RTK you learn the mnemonics for each kanji which is unnecessary burden. Personally I use mnemonics for maybe 25% to 35%. Furthermore, coming up with my own mnemonics works better. They're natural and never feel forced, and they're often funny or at least amusing which makes learning fun. Very different from reading a mnemonic made by someone else and going "yeah it kind of looks like that".

I looked at some RTK pages again just now and it has many descriptions that are stupid and useless. That's not what I thought when I was using it, but now it seems quite bad actually.

With core6k I take extra steps to increase retention. Some kanji I paste in a dictionary to get more information. For words made from multiple kanji that weren't covered yet, I look up each kanji separately to "combine the meanings" when they make sense. I also write each new kanji on paper because it helps understand the structure, and helps remember it. Don't really need RTK to understand the structure. Writing it helps a ton desu.

I'm sure this is a retarded question, but how do you import non-primary definitions into anki using Rikaisama? Just for example, if I hover over しゃせい the first result is sketching, and if I press r, that's what gets imported into anki. Oh God no, I'm not using Heisig's garbage mnemonics. I'm just using his ordering system and keywords/nomenclature. If I need a mnemonic I'll generally make my own.

And obviously any further study you undertake will enhance your comprehension. But I'm not yet at the point in core6K where its throwing me complex jukugo so that isn't super-necessary. The hardest thing I'm finding at the moment are transitive/intransitive verbs, adverb conjugations like 近い and 近く and when they throw a bunch of different kanji at me that have similar meaning but different nuance. 暑い and 熱い. But again, radicals help a lot. The 日 in the former suggests atmospheric heat while the oven/firepit mutation of 火 in the latter suggests tactile heat.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

The vocabulary section itself is usually relatively easy, but there is some harder stuff in the reading sections. Just download the Shin Kanzen Master reading prep book and look at the difficulty of those things. I'm sure you'll find some things you haven't seen before, especially in the segments on pamphlets and shit like that. 月極 is one example of something you will see all the time in Japan, and that the JLPT seems to like, but appears almost never in VNs and shit.

On the actual vocab section personally I fucked up 味がしみる on the test (it came down to a 50/50 and I guessed wrong).

Should I major in TESL for my bachelors? I'd get a teaching license and major in Japanese or Chinese at the same time. I know in Hong Kong the pay for an English teacher can be 5000 USD + a month with the right experience.

I have pretty good memory and especially when it comes to foreign language learning, but I'm going for 20 per day not 30 per day, it just ended up being 30 today because I forgot about it last night and only managed to review 10 before going to bed.

I am doing recognition + production + meaning + reading etc, I dont see any purpose in any other way of learning

What is your opinion on learning completely via exposure (as Steve Kaufman does) by reading and listening and putting the translation/word on the front of cards only?

It will work as a beginner, because you know almost nothing. The common words get reinforced constantly and you'll feel like you're progressing by leaps and bounds if you can bear down and focus enough.

When you get to an intermediate stage, it will slow down, simply because there is less to learn per text. This is not unique to learning via exposure, however it has the problem of the new words not really being reinforced as often as they probably should be. You can avoid this somewhat by simply re-reading things really frequently, but in doing so, why not just use an SRS software to make it more efficient?

When you get to intermediate ~ advanced the new words you'll run into aren't frequently encountered enough that you'll probably end up in a cycle of forgetting them. The type of words you would only encounter every 3~4 weeks, depending on how widely read you are. This is where it becomes truly difficult to progress without any form of focused study, from a simple list of new words to putting them in an SRS. They're simply not reinforced enough naturally, or aren't really intuitive enough for you to remember after seeing once etc.

tldr: There are severe diminishing returns, and eventually new words become too sparse/rare to reinforce themselves naturally.

I would say that it's café music, or uni lounge music.
Soft rock (probably not the right term but it sounds like soft rock to me) like what you posted is fine in some cases but in my personal opinion it's mostly just plain dreary.
