So I have to move to Japan for work. I don't speak a word of Japanese and I have 9 months to learn. How fucked am I? Does anyone know how to learn a language fairly quickly? I've bought a few books but it's not sinking in
I'm not a weeb either and have never really watched anime or Japanese TV. would this help?

Japanese is easiest language.
You learned English(most difficult language in the world) perfectly. so you can do it.

Bump.

Could you recommend the best method to learn? You seem to have learned English pretty well, maybe it'll work in reverse.

I never had a full time job so apologies if this sounds dumb, but why the fuck would your employer send you to Japan if you didn't know the language?

Nobody in the business knows the language, I'm the closest to being bi-lingual as I speak some German. Ideally they would send someone else if they had the time to find someone, however housing/insurance etc. needs to be sorted fairly soon so they chose me. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited, I just feel slightly fucked in the language department.

Follow what the sidebar of r/learnjapanese says.

You can make it if you don't have to read written Japanese, but even then you need to study every single fucking day and choose a somewhat fast learning method or you are fucked.
If you learn like in college classes you'll not even be able to order something in a restaurant after 9months.

This. I've been studying on my own for 6 months with Anki(coupled with the core2k/6k deck) and Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. I can express a lot of the things I want to say with relative ease, and I'm reading manga in Japanese for fun.
By contrast, a friend of mine has been studying Japanese at college for two years (he's in Japanese 4 now), and I've surpassed him.
