◆「日出ずる国をやっつけろ」保守派コメンテーターの過激著書がアメリカでベストセラーに

今、「Killing the Rising Sun How Amerika Vanquished World War II Japan」という、
日本について書かれた本が全米で大ヒットしているという。
タイトルを訳すと「日出ずる国をやっつけろ アメリカはどうやって第二次世界大戦で日本を屈服させたか」で
広島と長崎への原爆投下の正当性を検証する歴史書だ。

著者は20年間続いている報道番組の司会者であるビル・オライリー氏。
アメリカ人なら誰でも知っている著名な保守派政治コメンテーターだという。

発売されたのは9月、発売初日に10万部を突破、その後3か月で約50万部が売れた。
そのペースは大ヒットしたトマ・ピケティ氏の「21世紀の資本」を上回る勢いだ。

本の中では、第二次世界大戦で旧日本軍がアジアで非人道的な行為を行ったと記述されており、
南京事件については「日本軍は組織的に冒とく的行為をし、南京の60万人の市民の半分を殺害した。
中国の人々が残忍に虐げられるニュースに日本の人々は興奮していた」と表現されている。

また、旧日本軍が戦時中に殺害した中国人の数を2000万人としているが、
これは日本の教科書での記述1000万人とはかけ離れた数で、歴史的な誤りも散見される。

さらに、アメリカが最終的に原爆投下を決めた背景には、
日本の武士道を重んじる文化にあったとも指摘している。

無条件降伏をなかなか認めない日本を降伏させるためには核兵器の使用しか方法はなく、
あのまま戦争を続けていたらさらに多くの命が失われていた。
そのため原爆投下は正しかった、と結論付けている。

旧日本軍の真珠湾攻撃から75年。
この本を読んだアメリカ人は何を思うのか。

ハーバード大学を卒業し、FBI、CIAの内定を辞退したタレントのREINA氏は、
「著者は政治コメンテーターの全米トップ5に入るくらいの知名度があるので、
この本の内容を真実として受け入れる人はたくさんいる」とコメント。

カリフォルニア在住のコラムニスト、町山智浩氏によると、
「この層の4割は自分の生まれた街から出ず、外国への影響は投票でしか与えられない」と話す。

多くは地方に住む年齢65歳以上で、ブルーカラーの仕事を引退し、
家で朝から晩までテレビを観る生活しており、
この本をスーパーマーケットのレジ横でを手に取っているのだという。

町山氏は「この本はシリーズ6作目で、累計で600万部を超えていると言われているが、
著者は歴史家ではなく、この本を読んでいる人たちは彼のテレビの視聴者だ」と話す。
