There is a place in America that to many is but a hopeful fantasy: it is a place where public school students are competitive with Hong Kong and Singapore; it is a place burgeoning with the world's leading libraries, universities, and researchers; where the poor can attend a world-class college without paying dime in tuition; where the people are hearty and healthy, and obesity stabilized or on the decline; where education and acculturation are class signifiers, not money and material possessions; where it is possible to live in a compact town with everything in walking distance; where nature is so treasured it became revered by poets and philosophers who influenced the likes of people as different as Nietzsche and Gandhi; where medical care is without parallel and easily accessible; where the economies are mixed and diverse, ranging from fishing to robotics and biological engineering; where politics is local and where civics is religion; and which in many respects resembles Northern European social democracy. It's called New England.

Educate me, what exactly is the definition of New England. Different people include a different set of states in it. Sometimes people include New York in it. Is there a solid definition?

That's all of New England in the traditional sense, New York is consider mid-Atlantic although the north east of New York is almost identical to New England's rural areas.
