Actually, 19th century was the time when we started being "relevant" again, with the emergence of industries and factories in the north, the birth of political self-awareness, the rise of nationalism (the inhabitants of the peninsula never saw themselves as italian before that, due to extreme political fragmentation) and the complete unification of Italy under the Savoia between 1840-1861.
