With the internet, our communication networks now permeate across borders easily (take /int/ as an example). Global economies are intricately connected and can topple like dominos if even a relatively small country defaults (see EU PIGS crisis). And the biggest issues of our time now permeate across borders (ex. climate change, global inequality, war, money laundering).

This reminds me of a silly realisation I had. People always mock movies like Star Wars for having planets that consist of just one biome and culture, but isn't Earth gradually becoming like that too? The unrestricted movement of ideas, people, species and so on are homogenising the planet, even the climate shift works towards this since colder regions warm up at a disproportionate rate, making them more like the already warm regions.
