Gender specific endings serve the same purpose as articles in English (indicating that the word is a noun) with the bonus of pissing off feminists and sjw's. You don't need to memorize anything, the ending is part of the word so once you know a word you know the gender.
>>68101463
But that's not always true. In spanish the rule of thumb is that words ending in -a are feminine and other words, especially ending in -o, are masculine. But there are a whole lot of random exceptions like tequila which should be said "un tequila" instead of "una tequila" and imo you don't need a gender suffix to indicate a noun.
>>68101538
Idk enough to discuss about specific words in languages I don't speak but isn't the word tequila non-spanish in origin? could have something to do with it.
Also along with indicating a word is a noun gender-specific endings actually do serve the purpose of indicating gender whereas languages that rely on articles would have to either include both an ending and an article or add another word (a suffragette/female suffragist?).

>mfw english has no gendered noun yet they're the only country in the world with the whole pronoun madness
>>68111159
Not really. For the whole "plant/plant/plantself"-thing, English is probably quite unique, but it isn't one country, it's many countries communicating in English, and anyway, it's extremely rare, probably no more than a few thousand worldwide.
If you just mean gender neutral, that's a thing in other countries too, for example in Norway and Sweden, probably moreso in Sweden, but still in Norway. And there is nothing controversial about the idea that pronouns shouldn't have gender.
Finland >>68104336 has no trouble recognizing that genderless pronouns are superior, for instance.
