It's been noted several times including by portuguese sources that Brasilian from rio is closer to Galician than southern Portuguese. It's just that they sing it more.

Southern US accent is mostly just British with a drawl if you listen closely enough, Br from Rio is mostly Galician with singy songy stuff that makes it sound weird.
