Most of the western front was fought in French soil with millions of French casualties and an aftermath that left areas inhospitable for human beings up to this day, WWI was very traumatic to France.

The Netherlands took 8 days.

Our government had fled to England. Before they went they gave a general the right to surrender for the government. And the instruction to minimize losses.

Most of our troops hadn't even seen combat yet, but as Germany was bombing cities and the military was instructed to minimize losses they surrendered. Although they kept defending a remote corner of the country after the surrender to allow France to prepare for the German attack.

The estimates were that in a full blown war we could have lasted a month. But there were no signs that allies were going to help us, so we didn't see the point.
