I think Europe isn't a single thing. There are different countries, cultures and mentalities and laws etc.

The UK being a little "off" compared to the mainland European countries is a constant theme throughout history. When the Celts in mainland Europe were already experimenting with iron chainmail and republican forms of government, the British Celts still fought on chariots and painted themselves with woad. When central Europe was an empire under Charlemagne, the UK was a collection of warring petty kingdoms. When the Frankish empire disintegrated, England and Scotland unified themselves. When mainland Europe picked sides in the wars of religion (catholic-protestant), the English created their own branch of christianity. When the multi-ethnic empires of Europe were dismantled (the Habsburg, Russian and Ottoman empires), the peoples of Great Britain held fast to their supra-national identity as British.
In the end I think the people of the UK dislike the concept of a common European identity because they already have a supra-national identity: the British identity. Embracing a new European identity would conflict with the importance of "Britishness" in their culture. People would consider themselves English, Scottish or Welsh first, European second and British third. Which would go against 300 years of cultural tradition.
