>>67793339
I have been to Spain numerous times and am the biggest fan of Spain and Spaniards
>>67792068
Looks inconvenient to get to the other side of the street, but otherwise looks nice
>>67792158
I miss nature
>>67792967
strange seeing a city street so empty
>>67793703
Here's my street again, but an old streetview (9 years ago)
hooray gentrification
>>67792967
wow a blue sky can make even russia look not so depressing
>>67793446
neat, what do you like about spain? what's your favorite region here?
>>67793703
hah, the crosswalk is just outside of the image
your city looks like it would be sketchy at night but probably a cool place to live
>>67793926
>neat, what do you like about spain?
People, culture, language, lifestyle, everything.
>what's your favorite region here?
That's a hard question but I'd say Castilla-La Mancha.
>>67793771
when did you move in? did you buy property or just renting? seems like the rent would skyrocket
>>67793926
It's Manhattan, so it's not very sketchy anymore
>>67794027
I moved in about 14 months ago.
I'm in a building for graduate students (owned by the university). I pay a lot but not as much as market rate
The rents are really skyrocketing but since the university owns the building they keep it somewhat under control
>>67794031
>>67794104
do you go to columbia by chance? just curious how much does it cost you to live there?
>>67794250
No, I go to city college of new york
I pay 1480 a month, it was 1440 last year. I'm in a somewhat larger than average (for manhattan) studio but the university's building is new and clean
When I finish my PhD I'm going to get the fuck out and live in kansas or kentucky or something, where you can buy your own house for ten months worth of manhattan rent.
I grew up in new york, but I'm slowly going broke
If you are thinking about living near columbia you will probably pay a litlte more than I do if you want to live without roomates. But it's also a nicer area.
>>67794638
jesus, how do you afford that?
i guess it's not bad for having your own place but i'm struggling to get by paying half of that
honestly kansas or kentucky isn't a bad idea, i'm thinking more out west like colorado maybe even idaho.
>>67794003
interesting choice
>>67794923
Graduate students get a stipend (I get 25k a year and it isn't taxed, which is not a lot, but enough for rent and food) and don't pay tuition. I have some savings because I tutored math for a year or two and don't have debts.
I can afford my rent + a few small extra things (going out to dinner with friends once in a while) but I'm spending nearly 115% of my income. Usually you shouldn't spend more than half your income, but since being in graduate school is a temporary thing I don't care that I'm spending all my money because I will be making more when I'm done (in theory).
I couldn't afford to live here forever, but since graduate school is only 5 years I can manage.
If I thought I'd be here longer, I'd move to a different neighborhood
>>67792068
>post your street
ok
r8
>>67795251
looks comfy and quiet, i'm jealous
>>67795179
oh that makes sense then. is it feasible to live in a cheaper area and commute or would that be too inconvenient in manhattan? you're going for a math phd i assume? either way im jealous theres gotta be a ton of money out there for you when you graduate
i'm just trying to get my b.s. in physics and get the fuck out, i hate this shit but im only a semester away from finishing
>>67795251
the nature is beautiful but the houses are lower-middle class tier in america
>>67795477
the left side looks nice but the commie block shit on the right looks awful
>>67795862
not math, but computational chemistry PhD.
I wish I was doing math, that's more employable, but I didn't get into any of the math programs I wanted to...
I chose a computational chemistry lab beause it's very heavy in computer science, statistics, and math, so I'm hoping to get a "Math-type" job later.
Anyway, yeah, living in the bronx (which is part of NYC north of manhattan) or somewhere else nearby and commuting to columbia would be quite reasonable and cheaper, but it would be a less interesting place to live of course. I was thinking of doing this myself (not to columbia of course, but city college and columbia are along the same train line). I may do it when my lease expires.
>>67795477
Some of the buildings make yours look comfy, hows the area?
>>67795862
Yes, but most houses are are over 50 years old so it kind of makes sense.
Newer buildings in the area are closer to upper middle class, which is probably as good as it's going to get thanks to the taxing and bureaucracy fees.
Personally I think the area makes up for it, here's what it looks like from the mountain on the other side of the valley so you get an idea of what it's like.
>>67796040
did you major in math or chemistry?
fuck the job market seems depressing as fuck for BS in science, is that why you chose grad school or are you really passionate about it
im doing the same thing- living in a more interesting place although its more expensive, i think its worth it
>>67796052
sorta reminds me of boulder, yeah the area definitely makes up for the smaller houses, its breathtaking
i bet it gets pretty cold though, what percent of the year can you actually go out and enjoy the surroundings?
>>67796052
>>67795862
it's gentrifying so it's an ok area these days
eventually it should all start looking like the left side
>>67796460
I double majored in chemistry and applied math, I am passionate about both, but I only went to grad school because I couldn't get a job for a year after getting two fucking BS's.
To be honest I had an average GPA from an average school (stony brook), so some of the blame is mine, but still I'm surprised how much trouble I had
Maybe I could have if I moved out of my parent's place but I didn't want to before I had the security of income.
>>67795477
How much do you pay here?
>>67796460
It varies a lot, lately it's been warm but previous years it's been anywhere from -10 to -30C.
Because it's on the west coast it also rains a lot, so the winter and rain is something you have to get used to if you want to live here, but when you do you can pretty much enjoy the surroundings all year around because it changes so much.
The top of the first mountain in the picture also holds Norway's 2nd largest skiing center, so that's another plus I guess.
>>67796617
600 for a nice appartment, it should be more but working for the state gives you benefits
