It must be difficult to understand that when you were born in one. The United States as we know it was founded on a bunch of people from different countries coming together. As opposed to a country like France, Russia, Germany, whatever that's occupied most of its land for hundreds of years of its history, the United States is very young and doesn't really have much of its own background. Many of us identify strongly with the traditions we grew up around, which vary considerably from family to family, as opposed to those of, say, a modern Greek family (surprise, they're all Greek) or a modern Finnish family (surprise, they're all Finnish).

TL;DR we identify with our ancestry more because "American" hasn't been around long enough to mean much.
