For what it is worth, I studied Mandarin for six years and lived in China. At my peak, I could read the newspaper, which believe it or not is a huge accomplishment for a native western speaker. The writing and grammar is simple as fuck. The actual spoken Mandarin is hard as hell. So while books will help you get the basic concepts, there is no substitute for actually living in China. You should also keep in mind Mandarin is highly idiomatic. Getting to the level where you have basic reading and speaking comprehension is relatively straightforward; becoming fluent is a huge undertaking. And don't get me started on Cantonese.

Maybe your English comprehension needs work before you move on to Mandarin. I said quite clearly that any book will suffice to learn the basic language, but Mandarin being a homophonic and idiomatic language, books were only get you so far. You need to live there to 'get' the language. No good deed goes unpunished I suppose.
