we almost weren't bilingual as well. C.A. Lopez and the post-war argentine occupation forbid using it
all it took was some civilian (passive) resistance to preserve the language, which was made official only in 1992

well 2bqf, what killed tupi here was mostly the massive portuguese immigration after gold was found and not really the colonial government, obviously they didn't help too by sending the jesuits away. B-but I wish we could speak 2 languages :(
>>

it was until the XVIII century 2bh, everybody from North to South spoke it, and people just used portuguese to communicate with the royal family. Basically when the royal family moved here they have put a nail to Tupi's coffin

It may sound cold but it isn't worth it, effort would be better spent promoting bilingualism in English which has better economic returns for it's speakers and opens better posibilities of finding anything from the largest scientific corpus to translations of most relevant world literature.

Our largest extant Amerindian language, Nahua, the Aztec language is not even at 2 million speakers at this point, Maya is a little below that with most of our remaining 60 national languages under 100,000 speakers. Sure, the government does invest in efforts to mantain them and indigenous kids get bilingual education in both their own language and Spanish but it is putting a heavy burden on people who would otherwise be more likely to attend university.

Don't get me wrong, they're beautiful and an important part of heritage, but other than for a profesional class of academics of little real world value and trying to change that through government subsidies is a waste that's only keeping down the people it's suposed to help.

until the XVIII the jesuits and the native tribes developed a common language among all tribes that became known as Língua Geral (General Language) which was spoken from North to South. But in XVIII century gold was discovered and the Portuguese King decided to expell the jesuits and give education to another branch of the Catholic Church which emphasized portuguese, also due to Gold being discovered in Minas Gerais, Portuguese immigration + African slaves became huge and slowly the Língua Geral was being phased out until the Portuguese Royal Family moved here in 1808 to escape Napoleonic Wars putting the final nail to the Língua Geral, but it still kinda survived in the Amazon until today and in the countryside of São Paulo and some other places until the XX century, but due to distance they evolved into somewhat different languages. And nowadays only the Amazon branch still exists and it's called Nheengatu (Good Language), and it's the direct evolution of the Língua Geral
>>
>>67567747
>Língua Geral
There wasn't much linguistic diversity in precolombian Brazil then if this was possible?
>>
>>67567905
there was, but since the portuguese allied and lived themselves with the Tupi tribes that lived in the coast of Brazil, they dominated and assimilated the others. Including those in the countryside
>>
>>67567905
also, yeah, Brazil was basically a huge rainforest from North to South, hence why there wasn't a big development and population of the natives. Most of them were in Paleolithic age still

Brazil from all its regions has a total 276 different Native American languages, but what's today simply called "Tupi" and "Guarani" are the mainstream languages that could become co-official language nationwide. I'd like to know if there is any Native American language in the USA that survived long enough to become a co-official language.

Speak for yourself, and again, the exceptions don't make the rule. The majority of South Brazilians are in fact mestizos, specially in the region between Uruguay and Santa Catarina where the original Gaúcho population was born as a literal tribe of mestizos.

Also, the very states that lack any Native American influence are exactly the ones with the highest sub-Saharan African influences, both culturally and genetically. You're on the losing end imho.

Except Uruguay didn't have nearly as much contact with Africans than the brazilian south did.

Rio Grande do Sul has one of the highest populations of umbanda practitioners.

Yeap, but still really slowly, also tons of tribes that forgot their native language are starting to have classes of them. Except they're almost exclusively isolated to Porto Alegre and Pelotas, and as I said, exceptions don't make the rule. I'm literally a Nederlander, and so are half the people I know, that automatically means most Brazilians are essentially Dutch according to your simian-like reasoning.
