Best US president? Worst US president?

(genuinely curious--we don't know much about them here)
>>
Best - Washington

Worst - Trump
>>
Oh boy, this is gonna be a long one...
>>
Washington and Lincoln are tied for 1st place.

the worst is probably Buchanan, who helped cause the US Civil War.

Harding is probably the most crooked (no Nixon wasn't so bad)
>>
/pol/ sez Andrew Jackson was the GOAT but IDK.
>>
>>67533146
>Trump

Trump has never been president dumbfuck.

He doesn't become president until january
>>
Protip: anybody picking a president from the last ~50 years for either best or worst is making a biased political evaluation and not a historical one.
>>
>>67533092
>nigger thinks someone in the world learns america's history aside from americans and their bitches.
>>
Best: William Henry Harrison. He delivered a two hour inaugural speech in the cold, caught pneumonia and died one month later.
>>
>>67533749
But... you're ALL our bitches.
>>
>>67533092
Best - FDR

Worst - Dubya
>>
best: washington i guess
worst: heard that the fucker after lincoln was bad.

>>67533675
true. still, i understand why people would pick someone as the "worst". but why should anyone pick a post ww2 president as the best?
>>
>>67533092
best- Teddy Roosvelt
Worst Hoover/dubya bush
>>
Worst: James I am just going to sit here until this whole thing blows over Buchanan

Best: Teddy big stick better hide your chick Roosevelt

Best presidents:

Washington, Jefferson, Polk, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Reagan

Worst presidents:

His trickle down meme only worked short term and ruined the American economy long term. Public debt and wealth inequality inequality skyrocketed thanks to him and the American economy has since been a hollow shell crudely held up by a succession of investment bubbles. He's the reason you think of endebted masses and a stupidly rich, influential upper class when you hear USA.

Jackson was a populist demagogue who decided to destroy centralized banking even though he knew jack about banks or economics, but he was butthurt at the several times he'd gone bankrupt as a young man. The depressions came like clockwork: 1837, 1857, 1873, 1893, 1907

The Federal Reserve was a step in the right direction but not until the Great Depression was the final piece put in place which was removing the gold standard that caused repeated deflation and market crashes.
>>
>>67534529
The mujahideen were a coalition of different tribal militias ehich fought against the Soviet Union, most were Islamic (as literally everyone in Afghanistan was) but none advocated for a global jihad against all non-believers.

Neither the Taliban nor AQ ever received US funding, which they didn't need because Bin Laden was a billionaire.

There we go. As much as dumb idiot Ron Paul fags are like mmmuh gawld standurd, there's a reason no currency still uses that.

It caused chronic deflation and crashes because there just couldn't be enough money in circulation. To cite an example, the Black Monday crash in 1987 would have led to another Great Depression had we still been on the gold standard. However, the Federal Reserve simply increased the money supply and everything was business as usual.
>>
>>67535100

For one thing, there's only so much gold out there to back money up and also in the 19th century, they didn't use gold for industrial purposes like electronics manufacturing.

>>
>>67534888
Reagan was more prescient than people give him credit for. He told Gorbachev what the next big geopolitical challenge would be--"The rise of radical fundamentalist Islam poses a grave threat to us all. I am a Christian and you, Secretary Gorbachev, are an atheist, yet we are both at risk."
>>
>>67534646
Buchanan wasn't an incapable guy, he just happened to be the wrong president for that time. In a quieter era, he would have been quite decent. But then again, the alternative to him would have been electing the totally feeble John Fremont.
>>
>>67535100
>opened trade with china
Huge fucking mistake.
>oversaw the moon landings
Something that the NASA has worked towards since 1958 and was proposed by JFK in 1961 somehow is the achievement of a president that's been in office for six months by the time it happened in 1969? This is almost as much bullshit as giving Obama the nobel peace prize at the beginning of his presidency.
>founded our environmental protection agency
Have they achieved something yet? Because the last time I checked half the US population still wasn't subject to emissions tests and could rip out their catalytic converters without facing consequences, the industry could still release enormous amounts of pollutants into the air and ground, tons of rivers still had pollution levels that made them unsafe for swimming and most garbage was still piled up and covered with dirt instead of being recycled.
>>
>>67535019
funny because /pol/ is one of the most physically fit boards
>>
Best: FDR, LBJ, Lincoln
Worst: Reagan, Bush I, Bush II
>>
>>67535476
All things said, it's good that Buchanan got elected in 1856 instead of Fremont because the latter's election would have possibly triggered the South to secede four years earlier, when the North might have been more willing to let them go. Also Fremont was a very weak individual, no Lincoln by any stretch.

So as bad as Buchanan might have been, the alternative was much worse.

This. He and Ben Franklin are probably the two people who can be considered to single-handedly found "America" from what had been a set of 13 disparate British colonies.

Of course there's also Lincoln in a solid second, since he preserved the Union in the face of Copperheads wanting to give up the Civil War.

Theodore Roosevelt
So many reasons:
>was a sick boy but forced himself to be athletic and outdoorsy to get over it, so he became a boxer, hunter, rower, etc. but was still nerdy and fascinated by nature
>read several books everyday
>was a prolific writer of various subjects and books that ended up being critical in their fields
>came from a wealthy and patrician family but his bro dad taught him to look out for the common man
>when he became state senator he would mingle with the plebs and see their abhorrent working and living conditions and work to change them and told other senators to fuck off when they tried their usual corruption unless they wanted a beating
>his wife and his mom, both of whom he loved dearly died on the same day in the same house but he didn't let it destroy him
>told corporations to suck it
>is the sole reason America has so many amazing natural wonders that are unspoiled
>whether you like it or not he jump started America's entrance on to the world stage in the Spanish American war, the building of the Great White Fleet, brokering peace between Russia and Japan, and ordering the building of the Panama Canal
>stories like this:
>thieves steal his boat and go up an icy river
>TR spends a couple days building a new boat and follows them in the 0 F/-18 C cold while reading Tolstoy in his free time and then arrests them
>marches them three hundred odd miles through ankle deep mud to hand them over to the sheriff

>explored the amazon

He's only famous for being a pedophile. That's about it. Italy just isn't one of those countries that produces colorful, larger than life political figures like Britain or France or Russia or the US.

>A city auditor deemed Governor Roosevelt an odd, eccentric man. A recreation billiards table would be deemed acceptable, but Roosevelt insisted that he wanted a wrestling mat instead. He had found wrestling to be good for his mental and personal health. The city auditor told the wrestling governor, “No!” Roosevelt soon had a mat in the gubernatorial office anyway, and 3-4 days a week, wrestled the middleweight champion. When Governor Roosevelt wrestled a less experienced man two ribs were damaged with his left shoulder pulled from its socket. The other wrestler received worse damage with a rib that had “caved in”. Roosevelt abandoned wrestling and returned to boxing as a safer form of exercise.
>Theodore Roosevelt continued boxing as Vice-President of the United States. Following the assassination of William McKinley, September, 1901, Roosevelt became the youngest Chief Executive in American history. For several years he continued to box as President. He would box against aides, the security men assigned to protect him and professional athletes. Roosevelt was boxing through 1905 when he mediated the conclusion of the Russian-Japanese conflict. The Nobel Prize Committee named Roosevelt their winner for 1906
> Roosevelt appreciated defense but discouraged backing away. President Roosevelt fought at 190 pounds. It is likely the boxing came to an end in early 1907. He had been blinded to the left eye from a punch or punches by 180 pound artillery officer, Dan Moore. At first his vision was “dim” (according to Roosevelt) during the winter of 1906. He likely attempted a few more bouts but stopped when he became permanently blind.
>President Roosevelt swam and rode horses as part of his routine exercise. Roosevelt preferred to swim the Great Falls of the Potomac. The secret service assigned to protect him was against these swimming conditions but the President dismissed them. Roosevelt swam nude with his clothes carried on head.

>During a campaign in Wisconsin, October, 1912, Roosevelt was shot in the chest. A bleeding Roosevelt insisted he would not go to the hospital until after he had concluded his scheduled speech. “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose…. The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech, but I will try my best.” His speech lasted ninety minutes.
> “The United States of America was among the first to infuse the idea of peace into practical politics. Peace and arbitration treaties have now been concluded between the United States and the governments of several countries…. On behalf of the Norwegian Parliament, I now present to you, Mr. Ambassador, the Peace Prize, along with its insignia, and I add the request that you convey to the President the greetings of the Norwegian people and their gratitude for all he has done for the cause of peace.”

Aside from the memes without him the US would have propably turned into a aristocrasy.
There are good reasons to adore him.

I'd say he was in fact the best.
>>
>During WWI, Roosevelt, although pushing 60, offered to organize a regiment and command it in France. President Wilson politely declined. This was a global conflict, not the brief three month war with Spain 20 years earlier, and there was no place for cowboy heroics.
>>
>>67546149
It wasn't. The move towards a more democratic and less aristocratic US had been happening for years at that point, as the base of population and political strength shifted from the eastern seaboard to the West. Jackson was a symptom of the changing times rather than a cause.
>>
>>67546014
thats a spicey-a meata ball!
>>
>>67546185
That being said, as a person Jackson was fairly badass, although that doesn't necessarily mean a good presidency.

Fun fact, the City of Chicago was incorporated on the same day of Jackson's term's end and Van Buren's inauguration - March 4th, 1837.

Not just pushing 60, but TR was in poor shape by 1917, deaf and blind in one ear and eye and walked with a limp. He'd never really recovered from his unfortunate trip to the Amazon in 1914 and it led to his early death.

Before he died, he had been talked up for another presidential run in 1920.
>>
>>67546562
Probably wouldn't have happened. The conservative wing of the GOP were unhappy with Wilsonian progressivism and thirsted for a return to the hands-off laisse faire capitalism of the McKinley days.

Fuck Blair and Bush. Both elected under dubious circumstances, terrible at public speaking, inhumane and corrupt foreign policy, spawned a culture of western backslapping and created insurmountable national debt with no plans to tackle them beyond cutting budgets.

Absolute disasters. Yet people hate the likes of Obama and Cameron more?
