We are interested in large amounts of metal. But if we need to spend more money getting them than we would just mining them here, then it makes no sense. Asteroid mining will only be viable once we have space industry for space. Then maybe the surplus can turn a profit since you are already making some, sending ships and bringing them back, bringing some products along won't hurt.
