They didn't take them away entirely, but made it harder to get them (unless it's an historical black powder gun -- officially it's everything made before 1901, which include smokeless powder rifles as well as some machineguns, but they don't include them for some reasons in the category -- which only require a copy of an identity card and aren't registered), though everything that's full-auto is a still a big no-no. The socialist scums tried to ban them altogether in 1998, but it caused so much of a shitstorm even among the left (traditional commies are into hunting and sport shooting in some regions) that they back pedaled and just modified the 1939 gun control laws. The right wing parties should have abrogated the 1939 because it outlived it's usefulness (it was supposed to prevent weapons owned by civilians from falling in the hand of German and Italian soldiers) and everything else it was supposed to ensure (ensure the quality of gas mask manufacturing by putting them in a special category, stuff like that) can be applied by making another law without the nowaday's useless parts. Unfortunately none of them have done anything about that since the 1940s.
