H2O is bland and most people wouldn't drink it, let alone pay for it. So they add salts to enhance / restore the taste by hardening it.

I have a 5 stage RO system and softener in my basement to deal with my well water. It's palatable and fine for cooking, but I still prefer the bottled stuff for just drinking.
