I'm going on a trip to New York and Boston in a month

Is it true that in the USA a restaurant can call the cops if you don't tip? Or is it just to grab a few more $hekels from tourists?
>>
"quoi ? désolé je parle pas anglais ... merci, au revoir, c'était très bon en tout cas !"

lol, no

if you don't tip (except for really really bad service) you're being an objective asshole though, they work for tips.
>>
>>67117744
>a restaurant can call the cops if you don't tip?
No. Just don't plan to go to that restaurant again if you don't tip.

Or just pay in cash. Round your bill up to the nearest dollar and tell them to keep the change.

It is illegal to be coerced into tipping.
Many places will incorporate a tip into your bill. You can ask for this to be removed.

Do not refuse to tip unless you are disappointed in the service or food.

>>
>>67117744
Pic related is capitalist ideology in a nutshell. To those living in that sort of culture, tipping is so obvious that those who dare to stand up against it instantly get stigmatised. To anyone OUTSIDE that culture, it seems weird that the customer should pay both for the meal AND half of their fucking wages.

The employer is the "cheap piece of shit" here, and likely also the one who made the infographic. If it was made by an actual waiter, that waiter must be the goodest goy ever.
>>
Fuck tipping the Sharters, if they want more money they're going to ask their boss to not rape them as hard, like everyone else does.

You're not a local, you won't be coming back, the subhuman burger flipper will never get a chance to spit in your food.

> I never tip and I don't care.

Nice try, leafie...

Anyway, this tipping crap doesn't make sense. Charge me an extra 5% and pay your workers some human wage BY CONTRACT, I don't like being the one who provides them cash-in-hand.
But I guess talking about taxes in the US triggers the automatic "European socialist scum"...
>>
>>67128781
The workers get paid though.

They legally must make minimum wage, and often times make a lot more. For a pisseasy job of literally carrying over two plates and drinks.

They don't deserve tips.
>>
>>67128781
a: tipping has nothing to do with taxes
b: restaurants are a for profit business, obviously they are trying to make more money by shirking minimum wage laws.
>>
>>67117870
>their boss is a jew
>im the asshole
fuck off
>>
>>67128926
They don't shirk any laws though.

They must legally pay minimum wage, it's illegal otherwise. What they DO is they defer the cost to the customer additionally by using social stigma.

So you're just paying a 15%+ hidden cost on the food.

Refuse to tip, it's a bullshit jew scam. And servers are retarded anyway. Fuck them if they want me to pay to bring me food

Let me go to the kitchen and bring my own food then
>>
I tipped maybe 10 - 12% in an American hotel for breakfast, and the waiter took 20 minutes to bring a box for my leftovers.

Is 12% not enough?
>>
>>67129158
No needs to be at least 50%

I mean it's fair to pay so much for someone to do the easiest job ever, right?

dude fuck them

If I get bad service not only do I never tip. But I also leave without paying at all.

Sometimes I even steal the cutlery as some sort of revenge.

Sometimes I even cut the chairs or poke holes with knife or fork. I regulsrly piss ALL OVER the bathroom floors.

Fuck restaurants

Fuck serving faggots

You don't pay taxes on tips, unless you are some kind of super-honest citizen who declares untraceable income even if you woud get away with not doing so.
So yeah, tips have something to do with taxes.
>>
>>67129605

Why don't surgeons get paid tips for successful operations? Or firemen for saving people from a fire?

When I went to a restaurant in New York, I didn't tip because the waiter spilled water and ice cubes in it over my table and never apologized.
Waiters in NY were overall so shit that they shouldn't reserve tips.
>>
>>67129828
That's why I never go in a restaurrant when I'm in America. I only "take away", food from resto and no tips.
>>
>>67129656
Are you that stupid? You can't live on $5 an hour. Blame the system but don't screw them as it's not their fault. Overall eating out in the US is more affordable than in Europe even with the tip included. I get that nobody tips in Europe so it easy for them. But what is your problem, leaf? Most Canadians do tip. Are you a chink or pajeet?
>>

The employer must legally make up the difference if you somehow made less than minimum wage.

B) be mad at your Jew boss who is trying to cut costs by paying you less and passing the cost to the customer

It's completely retarded and the fact that people will actually defend this is astonishing.

In the U.S. the fedeeal minimum wage for servers isn't $5 an hour, it's $2.13 per hour and the employer is absolutely not obligated to make up any difference but the server is obligated to pay taxes on normal minimum wage whether they made it or not.

They can quit and find another job though like you said.

They can't, if you make less than state minimum wage restaurants have to cover the difference. You can pay servers minimum wage, but expect minimum wage service. I hope you enjoy Tyrone putting his pubes in your crapplebee's sandwhich.
>>
>>67130002
>The employer must legally make up the difference if you somehow made less than minimum wage.

Sure, and your employer will get pissed that they're paying you more than they need to and they'll fire you.

>>67130182
>it's $2.13 per hour and the employer is absolutely not obligated to make up any difference
They are, it's the law. But as I said, if you have a server who makes $20 an hour in tips and then another server who sucks and you're constantly having to make up the difference in his hourly wage, you'll just get rid of them. Making the minimum wage off tips isn't exactly difficult.

>>
>>67130882

In this corner of the midwest it varies. You hardly make minimum during the winter months but during tourist season it's an absolute killing floor. Then only the strong survive.

t. dishwasher
>>
>>67130882

>It's literally one of the best jobs for unskilled fags because you get paid so much yet do NOTHING

That largely depends on where you're working, though. Sure, working at Denny's is probably pretty easy. Other restaurants, such as the one I work at, require you to know just about every ingredient of every dish, know how to make just about any cocktail imaginable, be able to suggest a wine pairing for just about any of our 50+ wines (and be able to describe the wines perfectly), and be able to do all this in a small amount of time.

It's not rocket science by any means, but it is hard work and you have to know a lot.
>>
>>67130964
>How much do waiters make in Europe?
Here, a waiter in a family restaurant makes something like 30€/day or so. Don't know about fancy places.
>>

>You are saying it is more than they deserve?

Most definitely.

Being a server is a very easy job.

>Make significantly above minimum wage

>No heavy lifting
>No strenuous physical labour

What's not to like?

>>67131111
>That largely depends on where you're working, though.

The market isn't exactly rational.

If people were paid based on their value then there wouldn't be so many scams.

Just saying I find it a little silly that the person BRINGING the food would be making more money with less work than the one actually cooking it...

>5. Can my employer pay me less in wages because I receive tips?

>Yes, under certain circumstances. Under federal law, an employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage. If your tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Many states, however, require higher direct wage amounts for tipped employees, or calculate the offset differently.

truth is service sector, despite comfy wages ends up with a majority the of labor, it's basically the new manufacturing

that doesn't mean uni research jobs aren't important, I'm just blown away by how many students in this state hold part time jobs ($8.5/hr), get to negotiate weird hours while filling in time after work doing 'research' ($15/hr) average.

Cutting hours is pretty common in research positions though, I don't blame them.
