The Russian Empire's GDP/capita was one fifth of the US. At the peak of Communism, it was one half. During Putin's Halcyon years, one third. Now it's probably about one fifth again. The Soviet Union may not have lived up to its propaganda, but it was certainly the best the Ruskies had managed to date.

Regardless of how retarded that is, Russia was poor because they were still mostly agrarian. Industrialization would have come without communism, and Russia wouldn't have lost almost a centuries' worth of art, architecture, culture, and ethnic pride in the progress. Russia wouldn't be a tiny rump state if the tsar lived.
