Do people still think China is going to take over the world?
Yes. English is pretty easy to learn for anyone who isn't from East Asia.
Chinese on the other hand is one of the most difficult languages in the world, especially for a westerner.
Then you have the fact the Chinese aren't very creative. There isn't a great deal of entertainment that makes you think 'I want to learn Chinese!'.
And to further compound this, there are several dialects that are unintellifible to one another, as well as two languages and two different writing systems.
