If everyone in your country learns English you're literally asking for the extinction of your native language

I give it ten years until Scandinavian countries require their classes be instructed in English.

>>
>>66986429

Yeah, but in the places on OPs map with high proficiency English has been taught for a long time so old people can speak reasonably well. I've seen quite a few US war veterans mentioning how surprised they were that most of the Dutch civilian population could communicate with them quite comfortably, for example (whereas this was next to impossible just over the border in Belgium/France).

The above isn't strictly true for the Nordic cunts though, here German was the main second language before and during WW2, but was quickly replaced with English in the post-war period (in the case of Sweden so that people would forget that we totes collaborated on a industrial scale 2bh). Still, having been taught extensively in schools since the mid 40s means most people alive today were taught.
>>

If it weren't for the immigrant problem I'd say the English problem is the biggest cultural problem in the world.

Even if it doesn't, keep in mind that ~5% of people might simply have some kind of impediment or disability that prevents them from speaking the language even if they understand it.
Like if someone's voice box is damaged and they can't speak normally, or they are deaf-mute and have to use sign language, or if they're simply (literally) retarded to the degree where they can't understand anything.
If you take into account all those different impediments that could affect language, ~5% of the population being unable to speak the language sounds fine.

This is already the case for most of the stuff in college here. A fair share of learning materials and lectures are held in English. It's cheaper and more extensive than Swedish alternatives. It's required to have good grades in English for pretty much anything above high school levels anyway.

Fun fact though. Back when I was in high school we actually had a school wide survey on whether you'd be ok with phasing out Swedish as our native language and replacing it with English and I believe it ended something like 70% being fine with the idea.

Btw, the problem with "utopian" opinions of the "we should all speak one language" type is that languages NEVER stay the same. This does not change in the age of mass media, in fact the Great Wowel Shift happened in English just as theater and printing press were taking off. People do not all speak in the Hollywood accent, despite hearing it from movies. In short, if you had English kill all other languages (like Latin did with mainland Celtic languages btw), after a few centuries, there would be no English anymore. There would be a family of wildly differing "Anglic" languages that all originated from English, but were not English any more than Portuguese is Latin.

lolno, Swedish English accent sounds like shit, our melody and cadence is super fucking unsuitable for it. Danes have the best English accent of the Scandis, funnily enough.

>>66993854

People here are fucking retarded, whenever you mention Swedish culture some fucktard SJW will go off at you demanding "specific Swedish cultural traits". Basically they feel that it has to be unique, if it exists anywhere else it's not Swedish, so that means we should import every sandnigger in existence. They can't grasp that Sweden is a part of the larger, European and Western cultural sphere, but we have our own flair of it just like everyone else. Then again, they're SJWs so you can't really expect them to actually produce a rational thought or care about facts and shit.

As for the English thing, it's mostly because our media and entertainment is 90% from the Anglosphere so young people are as familiar with it as they are with Swedish, it's not odd or weird or foreign to us, really.
>>
>>66993898
The thing about Scandis and their English cuckoldry is that their languages work much like English. Almost all Slovaks have English in school, however, English does not work like Slovak. We find many things natural in our language that freak English speakers out and we find many things in English that are hard for us. Our language works on declensions, almost free word order, phonetic writing and just 3 tenses, as opposed to English which has almost no declension, shitton of tenses, writing system that has nothing to do with how it is pronounced and strict word order.
>>
>>66994058

>>
>>66994058

It'd be ideal (and would force those fatasses overseas to learn another language)
>>
>>66994044

>As for the English thing, it's mostly because our media and entertainment is 90% from the Anglosphere so young people are as familiar with it as they are with Swedish, it's not odd or weird or foreign to us, really.

I can understand that. We have the same with Czech, however, Czech is barely a different language (92 percent shared vocabulary and we don't learn it in school or elsewhere, we understand it because it is similiar) so it feels a lot more natural. However, we never speak it, onlz understand it, because Czech people can understand Slovak, but don't speak it, so it doesn't threaten our language.

We all know how Yugoslavia ended. Nowadays, they all say they are speaking separate "languages" despite speaking the same, because they hate each other.

On the other hand, we have a very similiar language to Czech and if anything, it only helped our relations, when we broke up Czechoslovakia, we did so in a bloodless, civilized manner, we visit our respective countries, can talk to each other in our mother tongue and we can watch each other's TV. Proto-Indo-European probably functioned as a lingua franca at one time (as evidenced by the vast diversity of people who speak Indo-European languages) and pushed out all the old European languages other than Basque. Yet now, when you look at Icelandic and Albanian, they are extremely different, both children of the same ancient language.

>The globalist in me thinks it would be cool if everybody spoke the same language, but the loss of culture would be so great that it would probably negate the economic and social benefit of achieving this.

if everyone in the world magically spoke only one language only then just wait a year and there would be a couple hundred new languages in no time

how do you thing languages "appear"? does god just drop random dictionaries full of new languages every so often? no creoles evolve into foreign languages, vulgar slang becomes highclass speach, a made up word becomes a common colloquialism

did the roman peasants just magically forget latin and make up their own languages like french and romanian? or did regional slang slowly become more and more diverse until the root language was no longer recognizeable?

language isnt about whats logical, smart, or makes sense, no one just makes a language (well, spoken language anyways)

language isnt something thats carefully constructed, language is throwing everything at the wall, and keeping what sticks
its not about whats right or the best or the most beautiful or logical, its about what endures

A lot of people are falsely claiming that the move to introduce a unified global language is pointless because it would eventually diverge into different languages groups.

I understand where you're coming from. This makes sense from a historical perspective, but we now live in a post Internet world. Communication is globalised and instantaneous. New dialect groups wouldn't be able to develop if the mass media kept them down

I think you're grossly underestimating how technological innovation has changed the rules and flipped the paradigms that would've been relevant two hundred years ago.

As it stands, the fracturing of language is something that occurs optimally when the language is isolated by geographic barriers, we don't have this problem anymore as is evident by the medium on which this conversation is taking place.

You also have to consider that until the fall of feudalism and the rise of powerful central governments most nations themselves lacked a single unifying dialect of their language, the variation within a single country could lead people from one region to become almost mutually unintelligible to people from another region.

And I'd argue that while language isn't about logic or making sense, modern dissemination of standard language teaching methods in schools has made it fairly difficult for language to diverge, instead we see that most languages have converged and that regional dialects are becoming less common.

Nuclear war and the cessation of all communication as we know it not withstanding, I doubt that panamanian spanish and argentinian spanish will become mutually unintelligible no matter how many centuries pass, for example.

You don't get that media does not stop language change. Here is a quote from a Scottish linguist, Justin B. Rye:
"There's a widespread popular assumption that modern technology (gramophones, cinema, CNN etc.) will stop languages changing in the new millennium, because these days everybody knows what everybody else's accent sounds like. But accents such as Cockney never did arise because working class Londoners were unaware of how the aristos talked. They knew perfectly well; but that wasn't the accent they grew up with, and there was no reason to want to imitate it when their own accent was a badge of solidarity with their peer‐group. Nothing has happened to reduce the allure of a distinctive way of speaking as a badge of in‐group membership; and the more positively people identify with some particular accent, the more likely that high‐status speech variety is to drift, as social climbers refine their vowels while the native speakers react to being imitated by innovating further. Linguists studying modern “Network English” find that it has several regional subvarieties, which are diverging rather than converging."

We're not as bad as English as our Anglophobe reputation makes it.
However, most of us prefer not trying at all since we know we're bad than to even try.
This is a real thing in the French mentality : be good at it immediately or don't show your mediocrity at it.

fuck you faggot it's impossible anyway

over time you'd end up with dialects that'd further diverge from the original language and english would end up being what latin was to romance languages.

so suck my dick
>>
>>67012779
I suppose in countries that have nationalist movements like Scotland, the people are going to have a subconscious agenda to maintain and develop their local dialect. But in the case of England, the old northern dialects are in danger of beng lost forever.

I'm guessing this is an ongoing agument in linguistics and only time will tell.

That's easy for you to say. Spanish is one of the biggest languages and many people also speak it as a 2nd language. Spanish is not that far behind from English in terms of relevance.

Now try speaking a language with just a few million speakers and see where life gets you without English.
