This mask is so dense because there's nothing underneath it. He's used his scant knowledge of business to construct a set of populist policies based around what poor working class in low-infrastructure low-capital cities in the US would want. That's all.

When the guy who actually wrote The Art of the Deal described him he described him as an empty vessel that only lied and stole, and not in a particularly clever manner either - he exaggerated even the way he lied and stole because in his world, power = good.

Notice how he speaks about things like making obama show his birth certificate - he doesn't care about the issue at hand. He made him do it, that makes him powerful and therefore it was "a good job" that he thought he did.
