Fucking old shit, but the thought alone that we were a media powerhouse back in the 40s is melancholic as hell.
I mean our music has evolved a lot, but never with as much importance, budget and professionalism as those times. My second favorite age might be late 90s and early 2000s with bands like Café Tacuba,Plastilina Mosh and not exactly the same Era, but Caifanes.

"Scarborough Fair" was a traditional English fair, and is a traditional English ballad.

During the late Middle Ages the seaside town of Scarborough was an important venue for tradesmen from all over England. It was host to a huge 45-day trading event, starting August 15, which was exceptionally long for a fair in those times. Merchants came to it from all areas of England, Norway, Denmark, the Baltic states and the Byzantine Empire. Scarborough Fair originated from a charter granted by King Henry III of England on 22 January 1253.

The charter, which gave Scarborough many privileges, stated "The Burgesses and their heirs forever may have a yearly fayre in the Borough, to continue from the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary until the Feast of St Michael next following". (On the modern Roman Catholic calendar, the equivalent dates are August 15 to September 29.) Naturally, such a large occasion attracted a lot more than just tradesmen; they needed to be entertained and fed, therefore large crowds of buyers, sellers and pleasure-seekers attended the fair. Prices were determined by Supply and demand, with goods often being exchanged through the barter system. Records show that from 1383 Scarboroughs prosperity slumped.

In the early 17th century competition from other towns' markets and fairs and increasing taxation saw further collapse of the Fair until it eventually became financially untenable. The market was revived again in the 18th century, but due to intense competition Scarborough Fair finally ended in 1788.
The traditional "Scarborough Fair" no longer exists but a number of low-key celebrations take place every September to mark the original event. Scarborough Fair in July 2006 witnessed Medieval Jousting Competitions, hosted by English Heritage in addition to the usual attractions.

That's not your song anymore.

The song relates the tale of a young man who instructs the listener to tell his former love to perform for him a series of impossible tasks, such as making him a shirt without a seam and then washing it in a dry well, adding that if she completes these tasks he will take her back. Often the song is sung as a duet, with the woman then giving her lover a series of equally impossible tasks, promising to give him his seamless shirt once he has finished.

As the versions of the ballad known under the title "Scarborough Fair" are usually limited to the exchange of these impossible tasks, many suggestions concerning the plot have been proposed, including the hypothesis that it is about the Great Plague of the late Middle Ages. The lyrics of "Scarborough Fair" appear to have something in common with an obscure Scottish ballad, The Elfin Knight (Child Ballad #2), which has been traced at least as far back as 1670 and may well be earlier. In this ballad, an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she can perform an impossible task ("For thou must shape a sark to me / Without any cut or heme, quoth he"); she responds with a list of tasks that he must first perform ("I have an aiker of good ley-land / Which lyeth low by yon sea-strand").

The melody is in Dorian mode, and is very typical of the middle English period.

As the song spread, it was adapted, modified, and rewritten to the point that dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century, although only a few are typically sung nowadays. The references to the traditional English fair, "Scarborough Fair" and the refrain "parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme" date to 19th century versions, and the refrain may have been borrowed from the ballad Riddles Wisely Expounded, Child Ballad #1, which has a similar plot. A number of older versions refer to locations other than Scarborough Fair, including Wittingham Fair, Cape Ann, twixt Berwik and Lyne etc.

"I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a British hymn (patriotic song), created in 1921, when a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice was set to music by Gustav Holst.

The origin of the hymn's text is a poem by diplomat Sir Cecil Spring Rice, which he wrote in 1908 or 1912, entitled Urbs Dei ("The City of God") or The Two Fatherlands. The poem described how a Christian owes his loyalties to both his homeland and the heavenly kingdom.

In 1908, Spring Rice was posted to the British Embassy in Stockholm. In 1912, he was appointed as Ambassador to the United States of America, where he influenced the administration of Woodrow Wilson to abandon neutrality and join Britain in the war against Germany. After the United States entered the war, he was recalled to Britain. Shortly before his departure from the US in January 1918, he re-wrote and renamed Urbs Dei, significantly altering the first verse to concentrate on the themes of love and sacrifice rather than "the noise of battle" and "the thunder of her guns", creating a more sombre tone in view of the dreadful loss of life suffered in the Great War. The first verse in both versions invoke Britain (in the 1912 version anthropomorphised as Britannia with sword and shield, in the second version simply called "my country"), the second verse the Kingdom of Heaven.

The poem circulated privately for a few years, until it was set to music by Holst, to a tune he adapted from his Jupiter to fit the words of the poem. Performed as a unison song with orchestra in the early 1920s, it was finally published as a hymn in 1925/6 in the Songs of Praise hymnal (no. 188).

Palästinalied (Palestine Song) is a song written by Walther von der Vogelweide, the most celebrated German mediaeval lyric poet. Its subject matter is Palestine and the crusades. It is Walther's only song where not only the text but also the original tune was handed down to modern times. The full song consists of 13 strophes in Middle High German. Modern performers usually use only a few of these strophes.

A song in written in Danish by a Norwegian priest, performed by a Faroese band.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXmc1P2vLq4

Traditional version, also performed by Faeroese.

It's about a Scottish captain and his 400 men that signed up as mercenaries for the Swedes in one of the wars they had with the Danes.
The Scotts landed in Norway and began pillaging on their way to Sweden.

Before they got to Sweden they were set upon by a peasant militia. All but 16 were killed, and those were sent to Copenhagen.

On verse goes

"With dead bodies the bend was strewn
the ravens had enough to eat
the youth's blood that here was spilled
the Scottish girls lamented"

Modernised Fado, which is usually supposed to be sad, and here it's happy and playful.

I have been on a spree to listen old marches and such. This one in particular caught my eye. It's apparently originally composed by a finn when we still were the archduchy of finland in Russian empire. Well why is it in german? Well, the prussian prince was visiting st.Petersburg where he heard this march being played and fell in love with it and wanted it to be a prussian march. Never miss your history lessons kids.

That's also good, but it's a bit over-the-top, as was Queen's style. Part of the beauty of Lean On Me is its simplicity. Any beginner pianist can play it, and it's easy for groups to sing.
