I'd point the roman genocides and depletion of the gold and silver reserves as good examples. Even if the romans were successful invading (should they even exist), they wouldn't risk provoking revolts as logistics would be hell

Switzerland would most likely have the most efficient and aesthetic ports given what little coastline they'd have access to, Germany would probably be a world power today colonising most of North America. Also Italy now has direct access to the Atlantic which is probably significant is some respects.
