Some linguists believe that the "Ocracoke Brogue" found in islands off the coast of Virgina and North Carolina sound more similar to 16th and 17th century England English than the modern English as spoken in the U.K.

Basically they came there in the 1600s, lived isolated island lives in small homogeneous communities, and preserved the language and accent as it was when their ancestors arrived.

Mine wasn't bait, and I think "general north american" accent is the worst, it's the oatmeal of English accents,as boring as a fucking dial tone. But, some linguists do make that claim for areas like the Ocracokes.
Having said that, they sound NOTHING like Americans, whether or not it's preserved 17th century English, it is certainly unique, and most Americans can't even understand it.
