I'm just curious, is universal free healthcare TRASH everywhere (Canada, France, UK, Poland(I think), etc) or is it just Spain?

Here, there's lots of stories running around about people almost dying, having complications, or maybe even actually dying over a doctor incompetence, almost everyone has heard of a story like that.

In the city I live now you can get an appointment with a GP (the doc you need a referral from to see specialists) in the same day, but where my parents live it used to take 2-4 days. ER can take several hours, and a couple hours minimum. Last time I needed a specialist the appointment took over a fucking month, and if I remember right an old friend had to wait about A YEAR to get a surgery without which he couldn't walk properly.

They keep saying it's the recession but I think the system is just shit, I think we should do it like in netherlands or why not like the americans, that way gypsies wouldn't hog it.

Thoughts?

NHS is fairly good although the service you get is highly dependent on what hospital you go to, because some are managed better than others, obviously.

The thing about public healthcare is that because it's funded by the taxpayer, everyone will complain about it at every opportunity. It's the same way for everything that's funded by taxes. It will get a disproportionate amount of negative public attention.
>>
those stories are common in non-socialized countries, they are just able to suppress it due to insurance
>>
We need it, but it should be a safety net not a health plan.

Medicaid is our safety net for poor fucks, but doctors lose money on them.

Medicare was supposed to be a safety net for old fuckers, but they voted to turn it into a health plan. But they fucked up and left a huge hole in the middle so everyone is screwed unless they qualify for above.

I'd be happy with the NHS system. If you're a poor fucker your get taken care of OK. Nothing fancy, but you won't go bankrupt. If you or your employer wants to buy a better policy you can get much better care.

Over 60% of the docs in the US are now on salary. A lot of docs in private practice the US are no longer taking new patients. My last appointment I scheduled with my doc was 4 weeks out because it wasn't an emergency. When I had my self-diagnosed emergency appendectomy a few years ago I drove myself to the hospital, waited in the ER for seven fucking hours, then they took it out just before it burst (they told me so). I was in excruciating pain. Then I got a bill for $24,000.

Fucking hell. Something better has to happen. We are literally the worst of all possible worlds.

Quitcherbitching.

well that's a fair point

ours is "fairly good" in the sense that as far as i know they do have top notch doctors and equipments for when you really need them (eg if you're stabbed). but when its not urgent, the waitlist..................................................... its so shit, that i think next time i have a problem i'll go with private insurance, while still paying the public one for the gypsies with my taxes ofc

The main issue with the NHS imo is the structure of it. I think it's too large an organisation (see pic related) to run efficiently in the middle tiers. The size is great for buying medicines from the big pharma companies because of that awesome negotiating power, it should continue to buy stuff as a single entity, but NHS England should be split into regional units imo.

The other issue is that having a public health service like the NHS makes it rational for the taxpayer to want "big government" laws such as less sugar in foods, plain cigarette packets, etc. Because when people have unlimited freedom to fuck their health up it's very expensive for the taxpayer. That may create a "less free" society than some people want.

But overall I think the NHS model is one of the better ways to do it.

that's pretty typical here too

national healthcare is a pocket without end so only rich countries with small population can provide high quality health care in all aspects

There is no true free market for healthcare products. It's always distorted significantly by the government's role because no one votes for a government that would allow the consequences of a tree free market in healthcare.

true

It's actually pretty great here. Europeans simply don't know how to run a cost effective public service

NFZ is shitty. You gotta wait for more difficult and important surgeries for year or more if they are not life threatening. Also the food in hospitals is outright terrible and doesn't even fit the calorie/micro/macro elements daily intake guidlines. Also, if you need to go to dentist, better get ready to pay. It's literally IMPOSSIBLE to get there in reasonable time.
>>
Our health service is good because the UK is a 1st world country

Unfortunately thousands of people flood the hospitals with useless shit like coughs/colds
>>
>>66587741
maybe for that thousand of brithos come to spain for "healthcare tourism" to get free treatment here.

fuck you, scum
>>
>>66587519

Very true. We subsidize the rest of the planet. Even our largest NHS-esque program, Medicare, is prevented by LAW from negotiating prices with the pharma companies. So Gilead decides the new Wunderdrug should cost $10000 / dose to extend the life an an 80 year old by 3 months... we are forced to pay it.

GODDAMN I hate our health care system.
>>
>>66587225
IIRC obese people and smokers end up costing the NHS less because their lives are shorter
>>
>>66587861
It's not free. It's paid by the NHS.
>>
>>66587861
nhs pays you idiot
>>
>>66587959
Probably not true because while they're alive they can get treatment for cancer etc which is very expensive. The taxpayer could still benefit from the smoker dying earlier, but that would be via less state pension being paid out not NHS costs. Anyway it's very complex, they explain it here
