China used to be so welcoming to foreigners. Now they are actively trying to discourage them from coming.
What happened?

They werent as bad as now actually. They might have been ill informed but they were more "pure", welcoming, open-minded, and honest.
Like someone pointed it out here before, the loss of their traditional moral values, mostly rooted in Confucianism, has caused that shit. Confucianism wasnt bad for the Chinese at all. It was actually shaping their morals and modesty for a long time.
Mao once tried to destroy it, but couldnt, and after that, still it was lasting. After a while, the capitalization came into China and changed their lifestyles and views of living. And it totally destroyed the traditional values to the core and called up their notorious materialistic desires in their minds.
And to add to it, since back then, CCP has started anti-Japan and anti-US propaganda in full. It was in like the mid 90s.
Chinese have ended up only getting both the bad materialism and brainwashing as everyone knows.

As I said, this is because Xi has followed a more nationalistic line than his predecessors as proven by that butthurt parade last year celebrating the defeat of Japan in WWII.

I guess now that they are getting overaged, immigrants would be harder to assimilate in the future and try to get own rights.
