If you're a native English speaker, is it worth the effort to learn a second language?

Every book worth reading has been translated into English. Besides, the English language has the best body of native literature of any language. Also every movie or tv show worth watching has english dubs or subtitles. And the best music is all in English. Video games are in English

But more importantly English is now the world's common language. Increasingly every country that matters is gaining in english language proficiency and fluency

I've thought about studying French, but would it be a waste of my time?

Nobody needs to know a foreign language. Not even here.
You learn it because it interests you or you don't.

In the time people spend watching tv and playing video games they could master a couple languages easily. You could be speaking French for the rest of your life if you just gave it 8 months. And you'd remember more of it than your postings on 4chan.

And French is a pretty good choice. It's one of the most important languages, a big language in Africa plus your neighbour speaks it.
In the Netherlands people prefer German, which has like a 100 million speakers. And for practical uses Americans might prefer Spanish.

The funny thing is not even all Paul Verhoeven movies (who made Robocop, Total Recall, Startship Troopers, Basic Instict) are known by Americans.

If it's an easy (usually European) language, the natives will be better at English than you'll ever be at their language.
If it's a hard (usually Asian) language, you could be studying for thousands upon thousands of hours and you'll never git gud.
I'm jealous of monolinguals desu, you people have it so good never having to worry about collocations and idioms and whatnot.

Learning a second language trains the mind to think in different ways, especially about abstract concepts. Is that vital? Maybe, maybe not. How important is being well-rounded to you?

I've spent a lot of time and money to become fluent in English as a native Japanese speaker.
It's great to be able to communicate with you like this on 4chan, but if I put the same amount of time and efforts to the STEM subjects, I could have been more successful and secure careerwise.

No, it's not, at least in your case when it comes to Spanish. You'll need it after all

Because, once Trump loses big these elections, he'll be taking the republican party down with him, and as result you'll know nothing but democrat governments from then on, which means, Spanish will take a hold there, silently but surely, and in 20 or 30 years kids will learn it instead of English.
