They knew an expansionist US would eventually clash with their colonial boundaries. Keeping control of their colonies was also expensive and they didn't provide that much benefit to their country. They noticed this and sought to make a buck at the very least while at the same time strengthening a British Rival and thus a kind of friend to them. It was better than giving it to t he brits.
