We were left with a more or less good starting point in Yugo. And then their stupid wars happened.
Lost our main export market. Serbia was then sanctioned to hell and back up until 1999-2000 so nothing to do there.
Bulgaria was a total shithole.
Albania was even a bigger shithole that saw the open world for the first time after 5 decades.
Greece put an embargo on us 92-95 because of the stupid name crap. But even then hostility remained.
Then we got 350k Shiptar refugees from Kosovo. Then 2 years later they said thank you to us by attacking our country through a terrorist insurgency (they hoped Nato will help them once more to chop off North-Western/Western Macedonia).
Then ofc a brain drain happened.
And on top of that all stands our corrupt mafia aka politicians who ruined us even more.

So that's our case.

Slovenia, Czech Republic and Slovakia were damaged by communism, but our, historical wealth, western values and political culture saved us from even bigger decline in the transition period in the 90'. That's why our countries are richer than the rest of EE ( especially Slovenia, since it was a part of Yugoslavia which had the best standard in EE and it was an economic powerhouse of YU). The Baltic states were a part of Soviet Union which was even more devastating for their economy, (hence they lag behind us) but they otherwise share the same characteristics as other 3 countries mentioned above. Poland and Hungary are somewhat worse, Hungary mainly due to the fact that it not did manage to go through the transition that well and Poland due to their rather big size (and because their country suffered heavy damage in ww2). Croatia would probably be on pair with Slovakia or at least Lithuania, but they had a war in the 90' which damaged their infrastructure and economy. Their society is also more prone to corruption and political culture is very low. Romania and Bulgaria suffered alot under their commmunist regimes and are historically doomed to be poor, although they improved in the last 10 years. Corruption is rampant in these two countries and their culture and values are somewhat different from the rest of EU states.
