The problem with the question of language is what defines a language. Spanish and Portuguese are on a level intelligible (I heard ), Dutch and Afrikaans too (though somewhat unequal). There are however different dialects of Chinese in which a speaker of one will not be able to understand the other unless he is writing it down.

It seems language is more a question of identity than actual linguistics. But because of their great similarity linguists find it more practical to lump Galician and Portuguese together since they are so much the same.

80-100,000 in the Gaeltacht use it in day to day life, teachers have to use it at least 5 times a week in order to teach it, and the Courts/public sector/Government departments all need to have an ability to speak in it.
