1. The Brits wanted an alternative to the American colonies they lost so different lands were investigated and the newly discovered and mapped the East Coast of Australia was proposed as a colony

2. The population of England and Wales, which had remained steady at 6 million from 1700 to 1740, began rising considerably after 1740. By the time of the American Revolution, London was overcrowded, filled with the unemployed, and flooded with cheap gin. Poverty, social injustice, child labor, harsh and dirty living conditions and long working hours were prevalent

3. Even if our original population was descended from convicts that just means white convicts built a better country than other races who were free but most convicts were sent to Australia for nothing more than stealing food to feed their families

4. From a genetic viewpoint probably every person in the world is 'descended from a criminal' of some sort. We're far more interconnected than we think. So it’s hard to be even sure what it even means or whether it has any validity as a viewpoint. IF you have 32 great x grandparents, and one of them was a convict and 31 were not guess what you're a descendant of convicts

5. In total 165,000 convicts were sent to Australia , but as the Gold Rush increase was in itself in the order of 700,000 people in just 10 years then you can see that the term 'descended from Criminals' is far less likely to be as accurate as 'descended from Gold Miners'

6. So overall 165,000 convicts were sent to Aust. in 70 odd years. in the 1850s alone 700,000 new (non convict) migrants turned up and another 6.5 million turned up post 1945.
