for example, my family owns properties in Barcelona, we could afford to buy a house or whatever, but there are literally no houses in the city besides very small areas where there are things like mansions. If you want to live in a house here you have to buy it in the smaller cities around the main city, and spend an hour every day commuting to work (which no one wants to do).

We would only buy a house as a second residence in the countryside

Not because they're pricey. The location is what affects most of the price and a 70m2 flat in a regular area of the city centre costs way more than a 250m2 house in some urbanizacion in bumfuck nowhere. Unless it's a luxury one right there in some satellite town of the city.

People here don't like living in bumfuck nowhere in a place where there's absolutely nothing except other houses like yours and you have to take the car togo buy a carton of milk or anything. That sounds third worldish and depressing as fuck.
