Objectively yeah, thing's really are that bad. We're on a downward slope. With that said, the ruling ANC party have suffered crucial defeats on local/provincial elections, so there is hope, albeit vague. Public unrest is mounting, people are pissed. Especially the native black population. They were promised so much when Apartheid fell and in many cases they're worse off now than when Apartheid was in it's heyday. To quote a black acquaintance of mine (he lived through Apartheid) "Things were difficult, but you always had work, you always had food, and as long as you obeyed the law, you were safe. Now am I afraid for my children."

I'm white, born in 1991, so it's safe to say I missed the "worst" of it. Until now.

You ever seen Blood Diamond? Kinda like that except less forced. South Africans have a lot of varied accents oddly enough. I'm sure it all sounds the same to foreigner but if you spend enough time here you'll pick up the differences.

People from Cape Town tend to sound more pompous, the British accent really shines through. On the southern coast it tends to be more neutral, foreigners often confuse it with an Australian accent for some reason. I guess I can kinda see it, but it's nowhere near as harsh as an Aussie accent. People from up north or distinctively more Afrikaans, their consonants tend to be rougher and the "r" gets rolled alot. English speakers from up north just some like a bunch of fucking yuppies. I'm not sure how to convey that in text but hopefully you get the idea,

You can, it's just much more difficult. The deck is really stacked against you. The black youth however are starting to adopt a whole Black Lives Matter attitude, I think they've just discovered Tumblr.
