>Take foreign language course
>Spend hundreds of hours studying language over the course of several years
>Finally fluent
>Visit country that speaks language, ready to use my language skills in a practical setting
>Take five steps outside capital city
>Every town speaks a special snowflake dialect completely unintelligible to anyone who learned the language's standardized form in an academic setting
Every time.
>>
That's why the best way to learn a language is to actually speak with natives
>>
>>65805218
>Spend hundreds of hours studying language over the course of several years
so in that time you never consumed any sort of media what so ever from that country, or ever spoke to any native speakers in that time?
>>
>>65805218
>Every time.
how many times has this happened to you, friend

We don't have this problem.

The only non standard dialects is Silesian which is gibberish for anyone outside bumfuck Silesia and the dialect used by old highlanders.

My grandma and grandpa spoke Goral, it always sounded like Polish to me
>>
>>65805258
this. studying a language is a great start. once you understand the grammar it is easier to put ideas together and get your point across. but hands down the easiest and quickest way is to go to the fucking place and just try it. an alternative is to watch tv shows/movies in your target language (for poorfags like me who cant afford to fly to france to learn a language ill rarely use)
>>
>>65805298
How easy is it to find media in a language's non-standard dialect that isn't shitty local-access stuff?
I'm sure bigger dialects like Bavarian German or Kansai Japanese have a lot of media, but if you wanted to learn the obscure Swiss German dialects, I can't imagine it's that easy to find.

It's a lot easier to understand podhale dialect since they only use some archaism and any foreign loanwords are from other slavic languages.

Silesian isn't

Japan doesn't really have strong dialects, in terms of language and grammar used. It's mostly a case of different intonation, and the odd slang that the majority of other japanese know anyway.

look where you are man. were on /int/. everyone here is from everywhere. ask around and see if someone can hook you up with some local media. posters on this board are usually sympathetic to folks learning their language.

>>65805218
Not really. French is pretty much the same throughout all europe.
>>
>>65805513
what language and dialect?
Swiss German? There's like 5 million speakers of it.
You can do things like look at newscasts from regions you're interested in
like >>65805730 has pointed out, it's ironic you're complaining about struggling to find native speakers on the international section of a Laotian knitting campfire

When someone learns argentinian spanish, and then tries to speak with someone from another spanish speaking country.
Every Time.
>>
>>65805845
how do you go about learning Argentine Spanish though? Would it be having an Argentinian teacher or something?

>>65805698
>Japan doesn't really have strong dialects, in terms of language and grammar used.
I'm sure Japanese people have an easier time identifying the grammatical changes in dialects to understand what they're saying, but Japanese dialects do alter grammar and pronunciation of words to the point where a L2 speaker would be lost. Verb endings change into completely different words (standard -nai to Kansai -hen, for example), vowels are added, subtracted, or replaced with different vowels in common words.
Some dialects, like Touhoku-ben, are so divorced from standard Japanese that they need subtitles even for other Japanese.

is brazilian portuguese really that fucked? i can imagine, with all the various cultures you have, that it would probably end up degrading into a kind of a pidgin dialect. or is it just the way they pronounce it thats off?

also what kind of dialect does os mutantes sing in? portuguese sounds very cool when sung imo

I learned how fucking retarded Brazil was when someone asked me "Que que ce quer". Like fuck you all, at least give me a chance

>Swiss German? There's like 5 million speakers of it.

I doubt most Swiss newcasts are in anything but standard Swiss German, rather than localized dialects like Basel or Thurgau. A Swiss anon is welcome to tell me otherwise though.

Should have shaven a year or two from college and spent the time living in the cunt for a while. Following formal education all the way through to a high level is only a good idea if you plan on using the language for specific purposes. If you just want to use the language and talk to people stop at around B1 and shift your focus from hard study to learning by doing.
>>
>>65805917
Yes, like, comming to Argentina and learn spanish here. If you learn spanish in your country you will learn the most popular dialect, if you're from Europe, you will learn Spanish from Spain, if you're from USA or Canada you will learn Mexican style Spanish. But some people learn Spanish in a Spanish speaking country, supposing it is the same in all Spanish speaking countries. There are a few cases of people learning Spanish in Argentina, and then they can't understand what people from other Spanish speaking countries are saying, or vice versa.
Sorry for the bad English, no one teached me.

north and south sound pretty different to me, but i guess its just the accent, because they are definitely mutually intelligible.

would you consider quebec french to be a dialect? i never studied any language formally (just on my own when im stoned and alone) so im unsure of what actually defines something as a dialect and not an accent or different language entirely

I have no idea how good an L2 speaker is, but i can understand anyone perfectly fine. I did say language and grammar differed, but not to the extent that you wouldn't understand someone. Little things, like changing dame into akan is such common knowledge. Although a different example of language entirely, it's like not understanding the word "cool", when it's not in the context of temperature, very fundamental.
As for subtitles, pretty much all shows that aren't fictional have subtitles regardless of dialect. And i've yet to see a subtitled drama because of dialect
>>
>>65805988
Proper written pt-br is not that different from pt-pt.
The problem here is not even dialects, the problem is that day-to-day spoken portuguese here is just plain wrong, and people don't give a shit.

I like to say that brazilians don't have different accents, they just speak portuguese wrong in different ways.
>>
>>65805218
Stop lying americans can only barely speak english
>>
>>65806103
go make a thread about it. just keep in mind they are on the other side of the world so if you want to link up w/ someone make sure to be aware of the time difference.

>I like to say that brazilians don't have different accents, they just speak portuguese wrong in different ways.
kek i peed a lil
either way, like i said, it sounds great when sung. it being incorrect doesnt bother one bit, because i cant understand a lick of it anyways

>>65806451
