The "midwest" accent that broadcasters were always supposed to have is considered the typical American accent. The epicenter of this was a town called Muncie in Indiana. Mike Pence, the GOP VP candidate and former Indiana governor, was born close to this area. I was too. The accent has long been considered "neutral" of all American accents.


That said, you can go 300 miles in any direction and get a totally difference accent. In fact, some of the coonass drawl from the deep south sounds like gibberish to me.

But with people relocating all the time the epicenter of the American accent seems to be drifting south and west. I'd say the typical American accept is now St Louis.
