Americans of /int/.

What are the practical dfferences between the Marine Corps and the US Army?

Marines are a fast reaction force and control their own fixed-wing aviation.

Beyond that, there's no practical difference in the way they operate in the field anymore. The Marines are rather bloated, there's no real reason for them to be that big, though having 3 MEFs is nice.

The Corps realizes that they are becoming redundant. They have been putting out all sorts of proposals and studies on how they can avoid being left out.

The biggest change is their vertical envelopment tactics. That's why the America Class LHA exists and all the Ospreys.

They are now talking about adding new mission profiles to the LHAs and LHDs.

One of their top brass is talking about maybe packing an LHA full of F-35Bs and putting it next to a USN CVN during air combat operations.

Basically turning it into a true mini carrier and acting as aa serious force multiplier for a CSG.

Another suggestion is to use the LHAs and LHDs to enhance ASW in carrier groups.

The USMC is coming to the realization that in the 21st century a carrier like their LHAs is pretty much useless against a real adversary. And the only way to make it relevant is to let the big guys take the lead.

Also this is now a military thread I guess.

>What are the practical dfferences between the Marine Corps and the US Army?

None now. Back when world travel was mainly done via ship the Marines, as a component of the Navy, served as a somewhat quick attack/reaction force that didn't require time and money to mobilize. The regular US Army pre-WW2 was quite small compared to other world powers of the time, so when military action overseas was required in a hurry, the Marines served that purpose.
>>
>>51057741
In Dutch the navy is called: the marine.

And in the marine work, you guessed it, the mariniers.

I guess it depends on if you're expecting too much out of them. Even if you're just using them as helicopter carriers, they're still incredibly useful.

I wonder who gets the bike.

Still a more mission-capable platform than the LCS.
>>
Marines are used to establish a beachhead and defend ships. So when American forces land somewhere it's usually the marines that go first
>>
>>51058472
Eh, I like the LCS. It's addressing our critical deficiency in minesweepers, which is probably our navy's largest downside. And it'll help us operate against midget subs in littoral areas like Iran and North Korea's waters.

Why not give this work for the navy?

To rescue people and defend Canada.
>>
>>51055269
Initially the Marines were a first strike force that would clear a path for the Army to occupy.

There are still a few somewhat superficial differences. Marines require at least a high school diploma to enroll, whereas the Army doesn't. Marines have higher standards for physical activity and fitness, but it isn't so tough that a civilian who engages in moderate exercise several times a week can't do. Marined bootcamp is longer and harder.

Am I missing anything?

But like most wings of the US military, troops are completely interchangeable. Even the National Guard fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.
>>
>>51059267
The marine corps is standing by on ships or in naval bases, ready to secure a small area quickly.

The army is your ten ton hammer, but they have their own quick reaction forces, almost all air-deployable (not just parachute).

For example:
75th Rangers (regiment)
82nd Airborne (division)
101st Airbone (division)

Other Army divisions are your large forces for taking on other armies.
>>
>>51059427
The Coast Guard is primarily a law enforcement agency. It does things like drug interdiction, search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, shit like that. It normally operates under the framework of the Department of Homeland Security, and only falls under Navy control during war time.

The reason for this is the Insurrection Act and Posse Comitatus Act. Federal troops can only be used to enforce the law under exceptional circumstances, when the states no longer have the capability to do so themselves. The Coast Guard is exempted from this for it's duties (in fact Naval vessels will often keep a couple Coast Guard officers on board in case they need to arrest a civvie for one reason or another, as the Navy can't do this themselves).

The Coast Guard doesn't actually "guard the coast" against shit. That's the Navy's job.

Isnt this the one of Captain Sobel?
>>
>>51059618
I was thinking about it.
I mean, a blue waters Navy being unable to operate on shallow waters.

That was kind of retarded somehow. Now it makes sense.

Our Navy here doesnt want a Coast Guard.

Not sure why tho. I dont have an opinion if would be better or worse.

>>51059759
Our Coast Guard is rather hilariously underfunded, and operates some very old ships, so it's not uncommon for the Navy to help them with operations, or even loan them ships for a few years.

Apparently they're planning to use 10 of the LCS ships to help the Coast Guard regularly, so that should alleviate some of the strain the CG has been under in terms of ship levels.
>>
>>51059920
Yeah, I wonder. Aside from the those drug cartels submarines full of cocaine, and some cubans trying to reach the mainland, what else do they do?

I doubt they have to do hardwork.
>>
>>51059636
Yes, the same division as from Band of Brothers/WW2. They have switched roles from being parachute dropped to air assault (helicopters) however.
>>
>>51059986
They get sent out to sinking ships and things of that nature to evacuate the occupants iirc

Alot of things. Search and Rescue is a big one. They guard ports and assist customs with making sure no contraband comes through, and also search for contraband on suspicious and/or non-cleared ocean-going vessels. They maintain buoys, lighthouses, and beacons. They police fisherman, make sure there's no poaching or environmental bullshit going on.

Basically they're ocean cops.
>>
>>51059986

They do a lot of search and rescue as well.
>>
>>51060111
Depending if they pay your tuition and you are lazy as Im, would be better to go to the Coast Guard than the Navy.

No stories to tell your gran kids but fuck it, at least you would have a degree and both legs intact. And no PTSD.

>>51059990
I read the book, very cool.

Still, tho US is always on military operations, maybe the Marines should join the Navy to cut corners.

I like how their motto is "The Few..." when they there is like 200.000 of them. There is more US marines than the entire British Armed Forces.

Psychosis
>>
>>51060296
I mean, the Marines are part of the Navy, their budget comes through them.

They've just sorta massively inflated into being their own branch.

>>51060341
Do you mean the exam to clear you for entry? Not particularly. Vision has to be correctable. Any medical conditions need to be fairly manageable (asthma is generally a big no-no). There are also height and weight requirements, though unless you're a complete manlet or a freakishly tall Goliath it's generally not an issue.

Such a great bird. I'm still mad the UAE chose the AW609 over the V-22. It's massively inferior to the Osprey in literally every way except for cost, and even there they're getting a quarter of the capabilities at half the cost.

>>51056570
There were just as many Army divisions in the pacific theater of war as marines. The army liberated the Philippines too.
But due to a masterful PR campaign by the marines they've made this legend that they did it all by theirselves.
>>
>>51058499
Amphibious assaults are a thing of the past. Nowadays the marines do the exact same things as army, only with shittier tech and funding.
The U.S. should deactivate the USMC and just add 3 more divisions to the Army
>>
>>51062063
Honestly, the role the USMC plays is to keep force levels up.

The PR attracts enough recruits that they rarely have to worry about quotas. Plus if we did do that, then pretty soon we'd probably start cutting troops from the Army as it'd be "too big", and we'd end up with fewer troops overall.
>>
>>51062063

The vertical envelopment the USMC practices has merit
