it's just that it makes stuff too easy that I feel like I'm not helping myself fully practice

I personally don't use it because every drawing is practice in itself, it feels as if if you do it you'll improve a little less.

Do what you are comfortable with tho.

Even scott robertson uses elipse guides and rulers. He has a video on free hand elipses, basically its a good thing to practice to increase your speed but there are way more important things so don't prioritize it.
