Needs better fundamentals applies to every drawing ever made. It's a cheap criticism and shows you have no understanding of what you're talking about. The only time Loomis should ever be used as help is if they're legit posting their first drawing and need direction where to go. The majority of people here are reading Loomis but haven't gotten to the point where they can apply everything well. So they need to be told how they're fucking up the application of it, not to keep doing what they're already doing.

Not him, but there is a big difference between someone who wants to make art for a living, and someone who just wants to make art.
Its perfectly fine to chase perfection at the cost of production, not everyone is trying to become rich off art. If your goal is to make beautiful pieces of art, you should absolutely be wasting your time making a perfect face instead of increasing your speed for demand.

But people do forget that there is a difference between making perfect art and just getting things out for business, both are important and don't necessarily follow the same skill set.

artists are always trying to improve their technical skill like their ability to do things more efficiently or accomplish greater detail and accuracy/precision to what they envision. but in the attempt to continually improve their technical prowess, they sometimes end up harming their style, reducing it to something ugly and overly realistic that eventually falls into the uncanny valley (much like real life). this board keeps attacking every non-realistic style with the exceptions of shit like impressionism or fucking cubism and nitpicking the anatomy of people in drawings, pointing out abnormalities in them that no one noticed or cared about and defacing the entire work over it.

the focus on getting shit anatomically correct is undermining the success of a lot of artists. there are people here who are actually trying to get employed, and trying to improve the anatomy at the expense of making a simple and good-looking style that can be generated quickly is detrimental to their success.

ie: pic related is of a successful artist, one of only 2 i know of who paint in this style and yet both are generating hundreds and thousands of dollars per painting. one of said artists has, over the years, improved their technical prowess but in the process, the style is only a shell of what it once was. /ic/ almost collectively shittalked the original style, calling it "kitsch" and comparing it to those spray-paintings of planets that utilize splattering of white paint to portray stars, and attacking the general vibrancy while holding up monet's works as if they were pleasing to the eye by comparison.

tl;dr this board forgets that art is not technology where we keep trying to jerk off about who has the most technical skill or advancement, it's trying to produce something aesthetically pleasing while reality is ugly.

Its quite infuriating actually. We get judged based off reality, so when people constantly misguide us for the sake of 'politeness' the effects of such behavior can be quite devastating.

Not that I think every mean critique is right, or that people being overly harsh is good, but being honest makes you a much better person in my books, given the sheer importance of that honesty.

Even if someone gets torn apart and learns they can't into art (as a career), better they learn that early and move on instead of years of delusion and thousands in debt. And if 4chan of all places won't give that to them, then they are in for a very rude wake up call one day.

/ic/ is a lot of things and a lot of people.
Like any other board you just have to be very selective of the threads you visit.

There will be shitheads and dicksuckers everywhere you go, but each general seems to have a culture of its own. The ones where people actually post their work tend to be more honest.

Disagree. There is lots of unfiltered but helpful criticism on here, just put in a little more effort yourself. If someone gives just a short answer, ask that person to specify what the weakest points in your art are and how they would go about improving them.
A lot of the stuff that gets disliked on here really does come down to a lack of fundamentals though and can mostly fixed trough working more. One of the skills you have to get good at is to see mistakes yourself instead of waiting for others to find them for you
