I have a similar idea, but it has more to do about how we strive for survival, and social resistance.

Art as itself is not a need to survive, a picture or song won't feed you or has a practical use in how a society works (roads, electricity, water treatment, etc), art is simply seen as a mere entertainment. So that's why when you tell someone you want to be an artist you experiment social resistance coming from them, either by making fun of you or trying to "scare you off" of it.

Maybe deep inside they think of artists as less because what we produce has not a real benefit for survival, and also why many artists have self-esteem problems.

This is a modern problem, I'm sure our governments are more afraid of journalists than of artists. Government put a lot of $ in advertisment. Companies too.
In my european country, public buildings spent 1% of their building cost into art: meaning the local artists are chosen and sponsored by local politics - so in a socialist town you'd better be a big leftist if you want your art in those public buildings. Those artists are mere tools for propaganda, as they were for Pharaoh, they just don't realize how they're being played - or they don't care.

society requires artists in order to actually make things look pretty and not boring. the definition of art doesn't just mean songs or paintings. everything manmade is designed and conceptualized by someone, and a lot of things have the aesthetic in mind.

back in the day people had wandering entertainers. humans CRAVE art and it only benefits humanity as a whole.

in the ancient world propaganda involved art (as in depictions of gods and kings) because not everyone was literate. it just adds life to the meaning and makes it understandable. i think it can function as the same thing, that art just makes the meaning easier to digest.
