well this is in essence "thumb-nailing". It's when you make random shapes with different values in an attempt to organise a composition before you actually start to paint.

It's like a sketch except that you're 'sketching' out value patterns and shapes instead of lines.

you know, i think its what distinguishes artists from the other; the ability to pout the subcontinent into context, such as images or music etc. supposedly that is what advertisers do.
i don't know much about psychoanalytical stuff. maybe you can ask lit. they are kind or holierthanthou when it comes to any thing in their filed, but some time they can be insightful...sometimes....
