I am following a few art history blogs and they tend to chimp out from time to time when they claim there is this big patriarchal conspiracy deleting female painters from history. They really try hard to make that narrative work and it seems like the newest shit among art historians.

viewer participation is how much the viewer/consumer has to chew on while they check out the art. realism (as in perfect, photolike realism) has the least amount of viewer participation. surrealism has quite a bit more, as you're trying to figure out what's going on. sci fi art often has quite a bit of it as you look at it and try to understand what the sci fi parts and pieces do. i hope that conveys what i mean properly when i say viewer participation.
