do any of you know of any professional / high level artists that aren't going to / haven't gone to art school?
i'm. depressed, and i need some inspiration.
>>
Im sorry to tell you OP but inspiration is only temporary and will only take you so far you need some dedication to move past it and to keep creating art. Just do it everyday constantly keep learning and you will make it. Keep going my friend best of luck to you.

probably not. she said in one her patreon video ramblings that she only chose it because it was the only option to work digitally.

He actually did GO to Calarts but had left straight away to work at Disney if I recall correctly (and never had trouble finding work as far as I know); he's just saying that without any real logical reason to. Maybe he really would have liked "the experience®" but he's probably just being diplomatic for the sake of his readers.

I'm very critical of the value of art degrees (I have a BFA), but the whole top left portion of this graphic is extremely misleading. It bugs me every time I see it.

The terms "arts" and "artists" are extremely vague in this infographic, and there are a lot of degrees that fall under this umbrella. This includes performing arts, art history, music, theater, film, etc. - things not applicable to the general interests of /ic/ but they are still being lumped into these figures. This gives a misleading impression that all art related degrees are equally useless, when some are in fact more useless than others.

For example, a lot of the people I've graduated with do actually have visual art related jobs (graphic design, illustration, etc.). The placement rate was way better than I expected. In contrast, some of my friends in the theater school told me that many alumni are struggling to find steady work.
>>
>>3111948
What kind of job do you have and how many times have you been asked for your degree?
>>
>>3111948
Freelance illustration. I've never been asked for my degree when working freelance gigs. Folks might have seen that I had one, and it may have contributed to them deciding to hire me, but I would imagine it would be a minor influence on that decision. There is no way to tell.

The few positions I've seen (not applied to) that are for in-house illustrators all required (or at least preferred) Bachelor degrees in some visual arts related field.

In Japan most manga artists don't go art school. Sometimes they start as pro in their teens. Typical pixiv illustrators don't either. They are self taught. Or ,if any, go to vocational art school for opportunity and business connection.
>>
>>3112226
I don't know how you can say this with such confidence unless you live in Japan or know Japanese anon, because a lot of that information isn't even on the web. Never mind that Japan has great schools dedicated to manga and illustration.

I live in Japan cus I am Japanese. Manga has not been considered art until rather recently. Many manga artists don't go to college. Instead they start their carrier as assistants for pro manga artists. This way they can acquire skill, money and business chance at once. Also in Manga industry, the younger the better. Because manga magazines' main reader is teens and young manga artists' strong point is that they understand what teens want to read. And in Japan often arts which would not be considered professional level in western countries can pass as commercial works. Again manga isn't "art". You know Attack on Titan? It's the bestseller manga but the artist can't draw shit. Pic related is his live drawing without any help from his assistants.
As for illustrator, more people go to art college or vocational art school. But those who become pro start their carrier while they go to school. Many students that don't develop skill or talent graduate from school and nobody knows what they are doing. There is this constant argument whether art school is necessary to become pro in manga & anime industry, because so many pros don't go to or graduate from art school.

You don't need art school to learn, but personally I think it would really help no matter what kind of art school you go to. I went to a flaky art school in Vancouver, it was about as conceptual as they come but just being in an environment surrounded by others who are all generally like minded inevitably leads to making connections and learning in and outside of class. Also if you often find yourself depressed, going to school and working toward something can help alleviate that. You should seriously look into it, you can even work part time and take classes part time which is what I did.

Anyway, you just need to focus on your art and never quit. Every time you draw try to learn something and repeat it until you get it. Don't give up anon I believe in you

carrier-->career (sorry for bad spelling)

For a manga artist, what's most important is wildly creative imagination and story telling skill. Art comes always secondly. There are always more people who can draw than people who can write stories. Also normally arts improve as they start serialization. And the pic above is for autograph session. Not for his actual manga drawing.

I don't aim for a professional manga artist but am interested in western art style. That's why I browse /ic/. You know Japanese manga style have roots in Disney.

>>
>>3112768
That's wrong. You don't go to an expensive art school to learn how to draw. If you aren't at better than 70+% of /ic/ level before you go to art school you are setting yourself up for failure.
>>
>>3112888
So you do have to already know how to draw?

>>3112892
we all already know how to draw

>>
>>3112892
yes im not sure what you expect. art school is more of a career building playground, like most unis.

my friend went into a cs major not knowing how to program. i thought that was normal, turns out a lot of kids go in with a lot more than zero experience
>>
>>3114895
You know, it's kind of impossible not to git gud from zero experiences now a days. Since internet and all, it's easy to self teach yourself things you didn't understand at class AS you're learning.
