do any traditional painters here find you have to work fast to avoid a tendency to overwork a piece?

any thoughts or tips on this problem? when i work fast i make stuff that at least looks good in composition or color. when i take my time i inevitably experiment regardless of errors and the piece drifts into a muddy mess.

sounds more like a color theory issue. painting takes time. Keep making mistakes and learning from them
