Are there any cheap dirty tricks to get all your values correct and locked down if you're working directly from a photo reference, so that you can focus on your brushwork? Without getting that cheap look of photobashing?

How do you do paintovers? It'd make sense if Photoshop have the ability to color pick off of specific layers, but it doesn't.
