>Really want to start painting in oils

End me.

Just do gouache for now, it will build up your painting skills and transfers well to working in oils. Or open your window and get a fan to ensure ventilation then use oils and paint small.
At least you don't share a room

I don't get it. Why can't you paint?

I paint in my bedroom. I have the window open all the time and I don't use mineral spirits or turpentine. Sometimes I use Liquin but mostly just pure linseed oil. I keep all my liquid bottles in a plastic box and put any paintings I've worked on in another room, although at the moment I've got a few in my bedroom. All my rags go into a sealed plastic bin.

Where there is will, there is a way.

I live in a one room apt and I'm sitting 3 feet from the easel right now. But it is a hassle.

pro-tip: you can leave the house
there may even be a free art space somewhere near you, who knows
Look up odorless mineral spirits or water-soluble oils. (Or compromise with acrylics.)
