Sorry to hijack the thread anon.

I urge beginner anons to stick to Keys to Drawing and/or Betty's book until one or both are absolutely completed.

The "essential" thing is to be confident at drawing things in front of you and to develop the ability to assess if what you drew is "correct", which is what these books will do to a large degree and teach you how to do it.

Developing your eye, your visual memory and the ease of drawing things in front of you both analytically as well as gesturally should take a lot more precedence than anything else.

You'll have to resist the urge of getting all these books and getting overwhelmed with information from sometimes conflicting viewpoints.

Most of the shit in "Beginner's essential books" isn't beginner at all. You'll struggle to get the most out of these books because they have a lot of wisdom that isn't apparent (or applicable to any real degree) to beginners.

Loomis is advanced beginner. Hogarth is intermediate. Scott Robertson is intermediate. Vilppu is advanced. James Gurney is very advanced. Alla Prima and Problem Solving for Oil Painters shouldn't even be on here.

(PS. Don't use drawabox, seriously. Keys to Drawing is miles and above better.)

I have a question regarding digital art: do pros use opacity based on pen pressure very often? For me, it just seems so hard to control, and it often makes me repeat my strokes 3X more to get a solid color. Am I doing something wrong here? I can never possibly press hard enough for it to be 100%.

A better solution in my eyes would be to control opacity on the fly for blending colors, but I really wanted to know how other people did it. Should I just get used to repeating motion after motion?

Before you get chewed to shreds, it's best to have a healthy blend of both digital and traditional to be a well rounded, versatile artist. However, it's totally up to you. Digital and traditional both have very different feels and require different techniques/skills, so personally I think mastering both is extremely beneficial.

The Hudson River School produced great landscape paintings. This is a very deep topic but hopefully you find this helpful:

First, get really good at drawing what is in front of you. This will take some time but the better you are at this, the easier the rest of it gets, and once you can render out the midtones, highlights, shadows and reflected lights, you can proceed to doing landscape type studies to your heart's content.

Hudson River students like Bierstadt, Moran, Cole etc all did a lot of sketches. See if you can go out to a park, sit and draw the trees. Really study them. Do the same for clouds and other features.

Two book recommendations for you:

Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes by Jack Hamm
Artistic Anatomy of Trees by Rex Vicat Cole

You can find more in this section, but these two are good starting points. Other books on this subject deal with rendering out individual things out.

Erik Koeppel has videos by the current school that teaches in Hudson River style, the Grand Central Atelier. He taught there for some time from what I understand.

Draw 100 heads from different angles, 100 Rubik's Cubes from various angles, 100 anatomy studies of 0033 tutorials, and 10 minutes of practicing drawing straight lines EVERY DAY. Don't forget to eat 3 meals a day, a banana in the morning is just fine but remember to never run the AC during the summer and winter to strengthen your mind.
In the beginning, you'll wish you were dead but it took me 3 years to get this strong at art. In other words, you need train like hell to the point where your hair falls out. That's the only way to get strong. These new guys who are fooling around with the "talent" and "Loomis is the answer to everything" junk will never make it this far. Top artists became good because they had the ability to change themselves.

i feel a little guilty for giving bad advice as a joke, so i'll give you some actual advice.

your gestures shouldn't take any longer than 2 minutes, and you'll eventually want to lower this to around a minute. also go for longer strokes and try sitting your canvas at a tilted angle so that it's easier to draw from the shoulder. experiment from time to time with pen instead of pencil to give yourself a good indicator of line confidence that you may have otherwise not paid attention to. also the most important thing about gestures is that you learn more from drawing an actual figure, as opposed to 2d static images, so go attend a class.

learning to draw the skull will give you a lot of knowledge about how the cranium works, even anime heads have features such as eye sockets and noses. studying the skull gives you the tools you need to construct a face, stylize it, and accurately place features. the same can be applied to learning anatomy. the more you know about the human body, the more you can stylize it. if you actually paid attention to the japanese manga you claim to like, you'd notice the heavy use of perspectives and other tools such as foreshortening, which had to be learned through studying fundamentals.

as with basically everything you study, the methods and processes you use must be tailored to suit your own needs. I bought a skull to study from because i wanted to do more drawing from real life, practice my facial construction skills, get a better understanding of the vipplu head construction lectures, and practice rendering all in one. so far i'm having a bit of difficulty with getting all the values correct and it'd probably be easier to learn using simpler shapes but i'm going to try to work through it. i like having the skull handy because it's a good reference of how light touches certain planes of the faces depending on where it's coming from, also it's pretty rad to just have a skull on your desk.

Considering you probably just picked up digital, get used to the program and the tablet you're using by drawing lots and focusing on accuracy. Shading with your brush size for example will be hell, especially if you're just starting out. Make it bigger to cover more space whenever you need to.

As for drawing advice I'd say don't be afraid of spending too much time on the drawing. To speed things up, you need to know what slows you down. And to know what slows you down, you need experience. Don't skip it. Keep your focus while drawing.

I like the stylization of the head. You could go further and look for more things to leave out. Perhaps some of the shading? The neck is also a tad too long. Ya might want to shorten it up a bit. The bridge of the nose could be a bit deeper and the guy's jaw should be a little more forward.

Now that I've given my two cents... Respect to those who can draw hair effortlessly well. Man, I've spent most of my time drawing that hair. From now on I'll just draw bald dudes and chicks.

I'm not sure, to be honest. I recall watching Proko, Vilppu and Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching. Usually I make up exercises to improve my visualising and 'eyeballing'. Whenever a question pops up while drawing, I just use google. Recently Bobby Chui, Sinix, Jeremy Fenske and Marco Bucci have grabbed my attention.

Now that I think about it, I really should draw more and actually do master studies. Hahaha...

I rarely post but I give a shot. You need to step back when you draw to avoid these kind of mistakes. The two red lines next to each other in the both pictures are of same length. The length varies in between the two pictures, but they are relative in size. They indicate that your reflection in the mirror is about one fifth too wide which is a lot in portraiture, and it has little foreshortening. You can avoid this easily when you begin your drawing and draw the big shapes (the mask of the face/jawline and back of the skull) just loosely and sort of throw them in with big loose motions not committing to the contour lines (the silhouette so to speak), then step back and compare some distances. I also drew a red line where you should have separated your digastric plane (what comes underneath the chin) and your face by either adding tone or a line. I like how your wrist curves but it should either widen when going down, or be cropped out like in the photograph. The blue lines show the disproportions of the hands. The only "error" or fix that could be affected by stylistic choices is the mouth of the character. I wouldn't have connected the bottom of the lower lip that high, it flattens it drastically, although it looks surprisingly good on the right side drawing. Finally, the pink lines show that vertically you nailed the distances of the mouth and the eye, but their alignment is not parallel like in the real world.

Never ever do straight center lines, even when you are drawing cartoon style. It is what gives your drawings motion or gesture. The curviness of the human body is what gives it motion and energy. When you begin your drawing, draw these S curved center lines, and then add in the mask of the face, and the cranium (back of the skull). In whichever order you like, some start from the center line of the body, add limbs and head, some do the head first and then do the body. I like to switch between these two. I like how you had some curve on your biceps. Your character has no neck and the curvature of upper back is not really natural. Just more practice needed. I also circled the armpit, I dont really know where the side plane of your ribcage is.

I also apologize if my lines are little bit shaky, I usually don't work with digital and I don't have my drawing tablet at hand, so I'm trying to do curvy lines with mouse, which I don't have any practice of.

Learn how to construct the face and head. You are copying what you think you are seeing, not creating a face. Achieving likeness is like winning in a lottery if you don't know how to draw (and by drawing I don't mean the hobby of sketching or doodling or whatever, but rather creating visual imagery on a 2D surface). There are plenty of guides of how to create head and how facial features wrap around it, and you can start there. Even if you would create photographically realistic charcoal work of a photograph you posted, you don't copy the photograph piece by piece, but rather do those big shapes in, then simplify it (usually by dividing the head and face of the mask in to lines to guide your later lay in) so you can measure (you don't need any measuring devices, it doesn't make any difference because you are measuring proportions like width and height rather than actual metric distances), then you start laying in the features and after that comes rendering.

But that first rough construction model takes some time and practice to make, because that rough shape with guidelines is what hits those proportions and rough placements where you don't commit to the shapes but rather the proportions. The lay in takes even more time and a LOT of practice so it hits that likeness of the subject, where you create those shapes and early guides of volume, and then comes the render which is a craft of it's own.

Try to divide the face in thirds. One third from hairline to brow line, one third from brow line to root of the nose, one third from root of the nose to tip of the chin. The three colored vertical lines show these thirds roughly, not following the curve or gesture of the face because I'm shit drawing with mouse on computer. In this pose we get a little bit foreshortening so you can elongate the forehead and the hairline a little bit, and shave off a little bit of the jawline and the chin, but I wouldn't take that much off from the chin that you took. Also your mouth bulges a little too heavily so I moved it closer to the center line to the left, and few pixels up closer to the nose. The center of the mouth doesn't align with the center line of the face perfectly in three quarters view, as the mouth bulges over the teeth a little bit. As I moved the mouth few pixels up, we got a little bit better proportions for the chin as well, so it necessarily doesn't need to be touched. At this perspective, I would tweak the M shape of the upper lip a little bit to fit the perspective, and as you can see from the horizontal line it isn't perfectly parallel to the eyes. Did you start your drawing with roughly dividing the face in to the proportions, or did you start with laying in the shapes when you had your head drawn?

Generally if I want to paint anything textured I do the lineart in SAI then paint with brushes in PS. PS has a wider variety of custom brushes you can download, although painting in that program is ass, but I think that there being more brushes is worth it.

Just do master studies of the art you love.

I'm starting to get a little bit frustrated to drawing with my mouse, so I did this fast without correcting my mistakes so sorry for the slobby lines. Your drawing is stiff. It's really stiff without any motions. If you do figure drawing, you want to begin with center lines. The center line of the body (following a little bit the curvature of spine, but a little bit more exaggerated), the S curves for arms and legs. See how the outer lines (drawn with red) are following parallel curves? My drawing is really slobby but the idea is there. In your skull drawing on the left of the figure, you did the cranium right, so it connects to the jawline about at eye height. On your drawing, you forgot the existence of cranium, and drew neck connecting to it at mouth height. The back of the skull connects neck roughly at eye height, you can try feeling your own cranium with your fingers now and see it yourself. Also notice how I drew the sides, other one curving and stretching, while other one has a little pinch to it, it creates a lot of interest to the pose, little bit like those roman statues. My pelvis is off, don't look there, I got frustrated with the lines.

focus on the curves and gesture. Your pikatchu has very beautiful render for a quick work, but the proportions are bit off, and compare the angle of the right hand side contour, the original picture has steeper angle. I can't give any advice of digital as I haven't done it myself.

Oh and most important, exaggerate. Try to search "drawing gesture" from youtube and just choose whatever video there and see the basic idea. After you get the idea, try to exaggerate that gesture and curvature of the center lines and then wrap volumes over those. There are great exercises for that.

And remember, this has nothing to do with your stylistic choices. This is how you draw figure and human body, no matter the style. See how the most simple cartoon characters imaginable follow this way of drawing. It is what brings your drawings to life. (sorry for my shaky lines, I don't know how to work digital)

I like to think I'm getting better at likeness.
Need to drop drawing with airbrush, getting all fuzzy and no truly hard edges.
Also weak values, darks needs to be darker.

with this perspective i didnt really know how to lay out my framework, so i did a light jawline and added landmarks and spent ~an hour erasing and moving things around. with the mouth, i noticed after i posted that i'd made the lower lip too fat on the far side, so added more darkness to make the parting of the lip look a little lower down. it didn't fix the fact that the mouth was too far over, but it helped the parallel line thing and the shape of the M. Also, the model, im pretty sure, is a child, so i tried to round out the face a little more to make it seem more youthful. the line on the jaw i was going to use as the start of the shadow on the neck, so the jaw should be shaved down as a result from that. I don't trust myself to draw circles by any means, so i work off of blocky, straight lines as the base drawing and from making measurements relative to other landmarks to block in new landmarks. if you or anyone else could tell me: does drawing lots of circles actually make you mechanically better at drawing circles? I feel like you can't physically improve how steady your hand is, so i never bothered using a lot of paper to practice.

No, don't fall in for a schemes where you are asked to draw a shape time and time again to improve. That doesn't make any sense. What you want is a really loose drawing where you divide your proportions, not committing to any shapes or silhouette.

Draw the mask of the face (jawline, vertical temple side, hairline) which wraps over your skull, and draw your center line and eyeline which also shows you the alignment or angle of the face. Divide the face with lines in to thirds (hair line, brow line, root of the nose). Then you can split the root of the nose and tip of the chin in half, this is roughly your mouth placement. Then you can start blocking in those blocky lines, making the shape of the cheek, doing that nose that is a big geometrical problem in the middle of the face, and those eyesockets. Remember, brow ridge pushes outwards. This is constructing, and here you decide those proportions and big shapes that give your drawing likeness.

You are starting your drawings wrong if you need to move things around. First determine your proportions with simple construction lines, check the angles and proportions, then do the simple lay in of features. If you cannot trust your early proportions then you need to practice just that. Measuring things from landmark to landmark (for example from the corner of the eye or tear duct) can be impossible if you keep moving things around.

I was guessing the drawing was of a child and you showed the roundness well. Also children have little different proportions which might throw you off in the beginning.

Try to practice three quarter views of a face with adults first so you can hit those proportions and perspectives of the features.

First time poster. Today was my first time buying/using an intuos, art book, and trying anatomy.

Not really sure why I'm posting since it's shit. More for my own records.

Also, I used PS to draw these. Should I be using SAI, Alpaca, Clip studio, etc... instead? A bunch of beginner guides told me to use stuff like that, but PS just happened to be on my computer so I just went with that for now.

Very quick correction, don't draw straight blocks, it kills out all the energy in the picture, no matter your stylistic preference. Draw the center lines and curves first, then outer lines, then volume. I talked about it few posts above

Muscles are not bumps. See how organic lines we get even when the model is muscular and flexing. You need to practice some of the very basics before moving on to stuff like muscles and anatomy, and you most certainly don't need to worry about which software you are using. No tool ever has helped anyone to improve in understanding of creating images with your hands. I know this youtuber annoys some people, but here are some very basics of drawing people. But don't worry, practicing basic elements of drawing (people might go as far as call them fundamentals) doesn't need to be boring countless exercises, but rather simplifying your drawings and thinking what you are doing. Drawing is making decisions, rather than rushing to the end.

tips on skies and cloud? I think it looks pretty good zoomed out, unsure about the darker cloud colours. I'm not sure out to massage it to make it softer. Hard light edges on top, and soft transitions on the bottom?

I'm watching through the free videos on ctrl paint, not even halfway through. Then I have to check out Keys to Drawing, Loomis, Norling, Gurney, Robertson and maybe even Vilppu.

Yes this is something Vilppu and other teachers in the New Masters Academy talk about. They have great lectures about head construction, one of the first construction lectures by Steve Huston is free to view in their Youtube channel. 3 hours of pure gold, he really explains things carefully here: watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg

This head construction is explained there, and the curviness of the center lines and the gesture is explained by Vilppu, although Vilppu can be little difficult to understand for some who hasn't seen any simple tutorials or read books about drawing before.

And remember these are not really about stylistic choice (demonstrated in the power puff girls pic above), even the most simple characters can be drawn well or bad, and it's mostly determined by their gesture - whether they contain movement and emotion.

There is too much face around the sides of the eyes. Look at the left eye on the reference and check how much skull is on the left of the eye. On your drawing you can almost fit an additional eye, way too much. I tend to do that mistake, too. Just be aware of it.

You don't really need to measure your head with any objects. Only rule of thumb I can figure out, that the space between the eyes is roughly one eye apart. You want to start loose, with your face of the mask and adding in the cranium, then stepping back and comparing. At this point you don't commit to any shape or silhouette, just the size. Then you divide the face in planes, eye line and center line which give angles and tilt of the head, and also if it is three quarters or full frontal profile. Then you divide hairline, brow line (on top of the eyes) and root of the nose in thirds. Then you can start placing in rough shapes of things (not eye openings yet, which are like tear drop shapes, save those for later). It's much easier to place actual eyeballs in to the sockets created by nose bridge and brow ridge and see if they are aligned well and in perspective, rather than trying to figure out these abstract shapes of eyelids. When you have those eyeballs, you draw eye openings, and start measuring things, like wing of the nose is roughly at the same width as the tear ducts, and the corners of the mouth roughly with center of the eyes.

adding to previous, remember that eyeball is roughly same in every perspective. It's a ball (well there is sort of small bulge where iris is but not really something we need to think of yet) so placing it in to perspective is easy. It's all the same, and you just have to see how it fits in to the eye socket under that brow ridge. When observing the face, notice how upper eyelid creates occlusion shadow between the brow ridge and eye ball both pushing out. If you look yourself in the mirror and start facing up keeping your eyes still on the mirror, that occlusion shadow disappears. You can now face up and look down to the computer screen, place your fingers on your upper eyelids under the brow ridge, and start facing down and see how your fingers get squeezed between the eyeball and brow ridge.

Drawing the eye opening in any perspective is easy task because it's as wide as the eyeball itself. When both of your eyeballs are parallel, same sized (count the foreshortening on three quarters view) just throw in the the opening and lightly erase that under curve of the ball, and then step back and compare.

I've picked up drawing again the past few days. Struggling with the smoothness of my lines, gesture drawing doesn't come naturally, so practicing lines and shapes daily. I've done a few copies of drawings that I've liked and been reading keys to drawing, Michael Hampton, I tried Loomis but it wasn't clicking with me. Should I just keep doing shape practice before I try anatomy?

II've only ever done 1:1 studies in black and white. I want to start on a fully colored personal project but I've been so dependent on references when I look at the canvas I cant think of anything to paint that I dont need to reference from, so this really hinders my creativity. How do I go about fixing this? Study more?
