Yeah that is indeed fucking stupid, where did you get the idea that this is how color gamuts work?
You think of the colors you want in your piece and you decide on the dominant color scheme and choose the gamut shape accordingly. The point is to use a shape that creates a limited, harmonized palette that excludes the saturated colors that aren't part of your chosen dominant primary color(s).
