At the ratio that followers actually engage with me, I could triple this and still wouldn't say I 'made it'. I also cull pornbots, I'd probably have another hundred or two (maybe more) if I didn't.

I'm curious to anons with good numbers - did you reach a point where you just 'took off'? I figure the more stuff you have out there that gets reblogged a lot the more it sort of adds up (If I have 10 things that each got 1000 reblogs, that's 10,000 instances of my work with potential to direct people to my blog). I don't feel as though I've reached any sort of critical mass yet, though, and tend to average 50-60 followers a month steadily which hasn't changed significantly since I started, despite my work getting more notes. I've noticed the last couple of months it's bumped to about 90 a month, but that's only the last three months and might be an outlier.

I have just under 1000 followers on tumblr, most of them being dead subs. What matters is having people who consistently reblog your stuff for exposure. That's the number that really matters.

Overall, I'm not too worried about this either since creating something that goes viral isn't very hard, it comes down to timing most of all: right place, right thing, right time. The key is doing it when you've built up the right content to hook people with.

Making it, at the minimal level, is being able to sustain yourself through art (without resorting to weird fetish porn commisions). By those standards, I'm certainly making it, with less than 1/5 of your subs. Still, what I personally consider "making it" and my ultimate goal, is creating a comic that gets published and sells millions of copies worldwide. That's making it for me.

Don't get into such vicious battles over small victories. Your sub count is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things unless its netting you 10k reblogs per post, and art commissions to boot. Marketing is important, but it's not as simple as "my number is bigger than yours haha."

Kinda. On Instagram, I've had The Black Power Ranger JYB, as well as Psy, like, and in the case of Psy, repost my stuff with s tag, and it didn't net a particular boost in followers there.

Insta is very weird to, as it seems most people follow for a follow or to artificially boost their own follow count up for vanity. So I'll often get like 20-30 new followers with one post, only to have most disappear a week later.

Honestly, I'd say unless you're seeking to viral market a specific product, chasing followers is only as good as it being able to net you commissions, and honestly, none of my commisions really ever came through Tumblr. All of my clients I've earned through word of mouth, forums, or sharing my art by interacting with people. Even that Trump comic that I made only ever went viral because I shared it on Reddit, and told the mods of that forum about it, who then gave me a sticky which bumped to the front page of the site.

That level of exposure was more successful in getting me a bunch of clients as well as contacts within the comic book industry, than me consistently updating my blogs, which is something I've admittedly gotten really bad at lately because of commission work I often can't show off.

Anyway, my advice, think outside the box, be proud if your art, and show it off to people. That's the best way to gain clients. Imo, the follower count is mostly fruitless unless you're seeking to viral market a specific product, and even then, it's ONE way to market things.

Followers will come around as a result of your success, not the other way around.

The thing with fanart is the occasional thing I do gets a lot of notes, but since I do mostly original content I don't get any followers from it. I've had bumps of 500 notes and almost no followers due to fanart.

I have a couple fan art pieces that have 10k+ notes, and other fan art I do that regularly gets 3k to 5k+ notes, but I seem to lack the ability to get followers given the amount of likes/reblogs.

I wonder if I should stop posting random environment paintings, or if I'm just doing something plain wrong that turns people away.

I don't really do much fan art but I do a lot of portraits and relatable stuff.

My biggest follower gains were after drawing someone with more followers, and doing a couple dumb charts.
